Over 100 Asda workers will walk out at a city superstore next week in a dispute over alleged workplace issues.

GMB union members at the Asda Superstore in Hollingbury will go on strike over claims they are not receiving adequate training and are having working hours cut.

Workers are calling on Asda bosses to prevent staff being overworked and "put at unnecessary risk".

Asda say they will "continue to engage with GMB representatives to try and reach an amicable solution".

A spokesman for GMB announced that Asda staff would strike from 8pm on Friday, May 24, until 3pm on Saturday, May 25.

Declan MacIntyre, regional organiser for GMB, said: “Asda management would do well to listen to their own staff and seek to address this dossier of issues before further disruption is caused to their loyal customers.

“Our members are clear that Asda needs to provide more staff hours to the Hollingbury superstore to help prevent existing staff being overworked and put at unnecessary risk of a health and safety catastrophe.”

Among other concerns raised by staff were issues with health and safety, payroll issues and equal pay disputes.

Asda in Hollingbury is the latest store to go on strike after similar actions in Wisbech and Gosport.

An Asda spokesman said a similar ballot for industrial action was taken at their store at Brighton Marina but did not meet the threshold for a strike.

An Asda spokesman said: “We value feedback from our colleagues and have worked collaboratively with the GMB representatives in Brighton to address the points raised.

"While we are disappointed by the outcome of the ballot at Brighton Hollingbury, where a minority of colleagues at the store have voted for industrial action, we will continue to engage with GMB representatives to try and reach an amicable solution."
