Albion played some good counter-attacking football and showed admirable backbone as they picked up a point at Newcastle.

Julio Enciso shone brightest but others did well, either in what they did or what they prevented the goal-happy home team doing.

Bart Verbruggen 7/10

Made a couple of decent saves and looked big and authoritative. He has also made progress with the ball at his feet and one pass drilled into the feet of the distant Adingra underlined that.

Joel Veltman 7.5/10

Was off to a really good start. Showed determination to get to a loose ball and fire home his annual goal, having galloped forward to help win the corner, and was doing a very steady job before making a sensible decision and calling time on his afternoon.

Adam Webster 8/10

Has made a really pleasing return to the limelight and he came through a test here. Some strong defending, especially in the second half, and is good on the ball.

Lewis Dunk 8/10

Impressed in central defence and ensured the top home scorers in the Prem created surprisingly little.

Igor 7/10

Newcastle initially looked a danger down his side but he got through some good work as the game wore on and is at ease on the ball.

Billy Gilmour 7.5/10

Booked for a tactical foul and was his usual tidy self on the ball. But the best thing about his performance was what DIDN’T happen as he helped protect the defence.

Pascal Gross 7/10

As thoughtful as ever on the ball in tight areas, including the move which led to the successful corner. Felt he was fouled when he bore down on goal in the second half and might have let fly when he tried to play in Welbeck.

Simon Adingra 7/10

Caused Newcastle problems wide on the left, often cutting inside. Sent a first-half shot way off target and later opted for a cross which Enciso headed over.

Julio Enciso 8/10

A massive threat to the Newcastle defence as he found dangerous pockets of space, beat players with ease and looked for the pass when it was on. His through ball for Welbeck deserved better and he also set up a good position for Buonanotte.

Facundo Buonanotte 7/10

Hard-working and competitive. Was crowded out when he got a sniff of goal late in the first half.

Danny Welbeck 7/10

Won the header for the goal and did some clever work, especially in the first half, attracting opponents and releasing team-mates. A shame he did not turn Enciso’s pass past Dubravka.

SUBS-  Tariq Lamptey 6/10

De Zerbi knew he could not manage a full game but he ended up playing most of it. Did a good job, including in the air on occasion, and one challenge on Gordon sticks in the memory. But he was outmanoeuvred ahead of the Newcastle goal.

Jakub Moder 6/10

Took over from Enciso in the No.10 spot and worked hard, without providing – understandably – the same sparkle.

Benicio Baker-Boaitey 6.5/10

His longest outing yet and was keen to attack from the right.

Odel Offiah, Carlos Baleba N/A

Late and valuable contributions in the heat of battle.
