A leading comedy agent, boxing patron and charity fundraiser has died unexpect- edly aged 53.

Addison Cresswell, who passed away in the early hours of December 23, went to St Luke’s Primary School, Brighton, and Longhill High School, Rottingdean.

He went on to become one of the biggest players in the comedy industry, representing Jonathan Ross, Lee Evans, Jack Dee, Michael McIntyre and Brighton’s own Sean Walsh.

Mr Cresswell started his career as a student entertainments officer at Brighton Polytechnic, now Brighton University.

Twelve years ago he helped establish the Brighton Comedy Festival and was credited with energising the Basement Club in Grand Parade.

He was also a major charity fundraiser and masterminded the Channel 4 Comedy Gala as well as the Brighton Fringe opening gala.

The comedy agent was also a boxing enthusiast who once ran Hove Boxing Club at the King Alfred Leisure Centre.

Mr Cresswell’s great-great- grandfather was bare-knuckle boxing champion Tom Sayers, born in a former slum area of Brighton in 1826.

In 2007 Mr Cresswell was reunited with Mr Sayer’s cigar case at auction thanks to an article in The Argus.

Mr Cresswell was close friends with British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Scott Welch, of Hove.

He was godfather to Welch’s son Tom, super heavyweight number one for Great Britain youth, who tweeted: “I lost my godfather and close family friend last night Addison Cresswell, I’m devastated the memories will never be forgotten. X”

A statement on the website of his company read: “He leaves behind a proud legacy in his tireless charity work, initiating and organising the annual Channel 4 Comedy Gala in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“It was his dearest wish to raise enough to fund the opening of a brand new wing of the hospital, a goal that is now in sight.

“Addison will be fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched as a devoted mentor, a dear friend and an unforgettable character. He will be sorely missed.

“He is survived by his beloved wife, Shelley, his dogs Bonnie and Nessie and many, many pet fish.”
