There was only going to be one topic that topped the most read list from 2013: snow.

The January snowfall affected hundreds of thousands of people across Sussex as schools closed and roads ground to a halt.

Our live blog on January 18 featured the latest updates on the roads and rail as well as photos, videos and your experiences in the great freeze.

It resulted in a mammoth 87,764 page views as people clicked to get up to speed on the snow.

Our second most-read story is from a completely different planet.

On May 12 we brought you the far-out news of a member of the public, who reported that a “wormhole or vortex” had opened up in Montreal Road, Hanover.

The report was made via the website Fix My Street, which is more typically used to report potholes, dumped rubbish and broken lampposts.

The anonymous poster said: “I was recently walking my affenpinscher (a toy breed of dog) around the Hanover area of Brighton when I noticed that a wormhole or vortex has opened up on Montreal Road.

“On closer inspection it seems to be some kind of portal to other times, places and dimensions.

“I would have investigated further but I was concerned my little dog would be sucked into it.”

The story generated 87,287 page views and was so talked about it made it onto BBC satirical news show Have I Got News For You.

It was a tumultuous season for Brighton and Hove Albion both on and off the field.

The trial of three Albion players and a former team-mate accused of sexual assault of a woman was our third most-read and fourth most-read.

Lewis Dunk, 20, of Brighton, Anton Rodgers, 19, now of Tilehurst, Reading,George Barker, 20, now of Portsmouth, and their former team-mate Steve Cook, 21, who has moved to AFC Bournemouth, endured an 11 day trial before being cleared of all charges, having protested their innocence throughout.

The argus.co.uk brought you a liveblog of the drama from the courtroom as the jury heard the accusations of a woman the players had met after celebrating victory in a cup game in July 2011.

Our live blog waiting for the jury to return its verdict generated 67,677 page views while our blog of the court proceedings saw 63,971 page views.

And fifth is the white stuff again, following the blizzard that hit on March 11, resulting in another bout of school closures and road blockages.

It resulted in 60,383 page views.
