Tributes have been paid to a Felpham student who fell 90ft to his death from a university tower block.

Matt Cole, 20, fell from the ninth floor of 12-storey Mercantile House at the University of Portsmouth.

The former Felpham Community College pupil was a third year forensic psychology degree student at the university.

He was remembered by a former school friend as “genuinely one of the nicest people”.

Barnaby Awcock, also 20, of Felpham, near Bognor, said last night he was “overwhelmed” to learn his friend had died and his “stomach turned” when he heard the news.

Speaking to The Argus, he said: “I know it sounds very, very clichéd but he genuinely one of the nicest people I had ever met in my life.

“He kept himself to himself and he was intelligent. He would not say boo to a goose.

He could socialise with different people. Really he was a delight to be around.”

He added: “He was so memorable. To have him leave so young and so tragically is heartbreaking.”

Kieron Playle-Howard, a former pupil at Chichester College, said on Twitter: “Gutted by the news of Matt Cole. RIP.”

Spencer Robinson, another friend from Sussex, added: “Completely devastated. So many memories I will always cherish. Rest in peace, Matt.”

The university's vice-chancellor, Professor Graham Galbraith, said: "It is with great sadness that I have to confirm the tragic death of one of our students.

"Matthew was a final year forensic psychology student who was described by his tutor as personable and friendly. He was progressing well with his studies.

"The university community of staff and students feel a deep sense of shock at this tragic loss of life.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to Matthew's family and friends who have the full support of the university at this difficult time."

Hampshire Constabulary said they were not treating Mr Cole's death at 4pm on Monday as suspicious.

A file has been passed to the coroner.
