Two cows died when cars crashed into a herd which had strayed onto a busy road in the dark.

The animals made it through a gate and onto the A280 road in Angmering on Wednesday evening.

The two vehicles, a black Ford Fiesta and a yellow Seat Ibiza, were travelling along the unlit road when they collided with the 30-strong herd - killing two of them and leaving both drivers injured.

One motorist had to be freed from their vehicle after the accident, which closed the road for around two hours. Both drivers were taken to Worthing Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The cows, which were guided back into the field, belonged to the nearby Ecclesdon Farm.

Yesterday the farmer said: “They escaped through a gate and they shouldn't have. I have a lot of stuff to sort out.”

A spokesman from Sussex Police said: “At 9.45pm on Wednesday, January 29, two cars on the A280 at Angmering, near Littlehampton, were in collision with a herd of about 30 cows which had strayed onto the road from a nearby field.

“The drivers of the cars were taken to Worthing Hospital to be treated for injuries which were not assessed as serious.

“Two cows were killed in the collision.

“The cows were herded back into fields by police, the farmer and passersby, and the road was re-opened again about 2 hours later.”
