Police officers were injured by a man threatening people outside a fast food restaurant.

Members of the public intervened to help the officers following the incident outside Burger King in North Street, Brighton, at 6.50am on Thursday.

A Sussex Police statement said: “The man was restrained by officers after becoming violent towards them.

“An 18-year-old man from Steyning was arrested for affray and assaulting police. He was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries before being discharged.

“He has been bailed until February 26 for further enquiries but he does remain in secure accommodation at this time under the Mental Health Act.

“Two officers were treated in hospital for minor injuries but were released later.”

"Detective Chief Inspector Paul Betts: "We need to speak to anyone who was in the area during the incident and saw what happened.

"There were a lot of people in the area at the time and we are particularly interested in tracing two members of the public that helped to carry an injured officer to safety. We would like to identify them as witnesses, but also to recognise their brave actions. If you saw or heard anything or recorded any part of it on a mobile phone please contact us."

Brighton and Hove City Commander, Chief Inspector Nev Kemp, added he was “Hugely proud” of the officers.

“[They faced] officers who faced significant violence this AM when they stepped forward to protect the public,” he added.

“Great that public helped one of the injured officers who attended hospital with mercifully not serious injuries.”
