A golf club has raised £6,800 for a hospice in memory of one of its former members.

Slinfold Golf and Country Club, near Horsham, chose St Barnabas House in Worthing as its charity of the year for 2013.

It raised the money through various events, including raffles and golf challenges.

The club’s 2013 captain, Terry Wills, said: “In all honesty, choosing a charity to support throughout my year as captain was a daunting decision. There are so many excellent local and national charities to choose from.

“In the end it was quite an easy choice. My very good friend, Roger Cliffe, a work colleague and member at the club, sadly died from a brain tumour towards the end of 2008.

“He spent a little time at the hospice in Worthing and this gave me an insight into the excellent work that went on there. It seemed natural, therefore, to support St Barnabas in his memory.

“I am incredibly proud of the amount of money we have managed to raise for such a worthy cause.”

The club’s ladies' captain for 2014, has chosen the hospice for her charity of the year so the support will continue.
