Cross pupils stage railings protest outside Hove Town Hall

Angry children and their parents protested against plans to remove safety railings from outside a school in Brighton at a council meeting yesterday.

At a meeting of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee at Hove Town Hall, parents of children at Windlesham School rallied to oppose the “dangerous” plans.

Ali Heal, of the Save Our Safety group, said: “Despite findings that show how well the pelicans work for the heavy flow of traffic and pedestrians the report somehow concludes that zebras would be better.

“The most recent report concludes that they should all be removed due to what appears to be arguments about aesthetics and cyclists’ comfort.”

A council spokesman said they are not aware of evidence that zebra crossings are less safe than light-controlled crossings.

The Friends of Dyke Road group also joined the call for the safety barriers and crossing to stay.

Jannet King, of Friends of Dyke Road, said: “While such schemes may be appropriate for residential streets and other 20mph zones, they do not seem to us sensible on a poorly lit, 30mph road used by HGVs and buses.

"We feel the two light-controlled crossings give pedestrians an unambiguous indication as to when it may be safe to cross.”

I personally feel this video gives a very good reason why there should be barriers or railings outside of schools i.e. it prevents motorists mounting the pavement but there again its never stopped a cyclist even though it is an illegal offense to ride a bicyclical on a footpath/pavement. https://www.youtube.

At the meeting last night Conservative and Labour Councillors voted for the Dyke Road plans to be revised, keeping the pelican crossings and safety railings as they are and a complete review of the shared pavement/cycle lanes proposed by the side of Dyke Road Park and in front of the primary school's entrance. The plans were described as 'unravelling' as more of the details came to light and that they appeared to have rushed and therefore poorly conceived. Parents of the local school, residents and community groups all condemned the plans for creating what they viewed as unnecessary danger for pedestrians, particularly young children and the elderly. The revised plans must to brought to the next Environment, Transport and Sustainability meeting on 29th April. If you have not had an opportunity to express your concerns about these proposals yet contact the Councillors on this committee and your local ward Councillors to let them know your thoughts.

Why do they insist in meddling in things they don't seem to understand at all?
If their kids were going to that school I'm sure they'd want all the protection possible and lights do give an unambiguous answer as to who has the right of way and when. Use the time and money tidying up the Stanmer area etc.

Its a sad City that school children have to protest for their own safety !! why is this issue taking up councillors time and money. Yet again its about cyclists needs; surely the lanes in the Old Shoreham road have taught us that they are under used and have made traffic a nightmare at certain times of the day adding to more pollution. Come on please lets put the safety of our cities children first !!
