Eight more drivers have been banned from the road after being caught as part of Sussex Police's Christmas crackdown on drink and drug drivers – bringing the total number to 104.

Superintendent Jane Derrick said the depressing post-100 milestone brought her “absolutely no joy”.

The latest banned drivers include: Chipo Maposa, 47, who was arrested after her silver Astra was seen to swerve in Church Road and then hit a lamppost in First Avenue, Hove, at 12.25am on December 1.

Maposa, of Elm Grove, Hove, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen and was banned from driving for 18 months. She was also ordered to pay a £520 fine, £150 costs and a £52 victim surcharge.

Dale Bedwell, 25, was arrested after his car was seen being driven erratically on the A27 at Tangmere on December 6.

Bedwell, of Huntscroft Gardens, Cowfold, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was banned from driving for three years. He was also given a 12 week suspended prison sentence, made the subject of a curfew and ordered to pay 385 costs.

Rik Cowlard, 44, was arrested after his vehicle was stopped in Ninfield Road, Bexhill, on December 14.

Cowlard, of Villa Road, St Leonards, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen and was banned from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £200 fine, £85 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Aaron Sims, 28, was arrested on 14 December after officers stopped his car in Eastbourne Road, Polegate.

Sims, of Penhurst Close, Eastbourne, admitted drink-driving and was banned from driving for 36 months. He was also ordered to pay a £92 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Arturs Mukans, 22, was arrested on 14 December after he was seen driving in a bus lane in High Street, Bognor.

Mukans, of Norfolk Mews, Littlehampton, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was banned from driving for 18 months. He was also ordered to pay a £260 fine, £85 costs and a £26 victim surcharge.

Chelsea Potter, 21, was arrested after her vehicle was pulled over in Little London, Chichester, on December 15.

Potter, of East Row, Chichester, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was banned from driving for 18 months. She was also ordered to pay a £130 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

James Smith, 29, was arrested after officers on patrol stopped his car in Queens Road, Hastings, on 15 December.

Smith, of Redwings Lane, Tunbridge Wells, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was banned from driving for 14 months. He was also ordered to pay a £550 fine, £85 costs and a £55 victim surcharge.

Antony Machacek, 55, was arrested on 15 December after officers stopped his car on the A27 at Lewes.

Machacek, of Norfolk Road, Brighton, admitted drink-driving and was banned from driving for 18 months. He was also ordered to pay a £535 fine, £85 costs and a £53 victim surcharge.

Superintendent Derrick said: "Every person drinking or driving and getting behind the wheel is an accident waiting to happen - putting not only themselves and anyone else in their vehicles in danger but every other person they come across on the roads as well.”
