Arsonists destroy Brighton park play equipment in mindless attack

The Argus: Children's playground goes up in smoke Children's playground goes up in smoke

Arsonists have destroyed part of a children's playground in a mindless attack.

A train themed section of a children's play area was destroyed by fire in Queens Park in Brighton at about 5.20am this morning.

Fire crews from Preston Circus station attended the fire but could only cool down the heated plastic elements of the play equipment as the fire had already taken hold and severely damaged the apparatus.

It is believed the fire was started after rubbish and a traffic cone was piled onto the play area and then set alight.

A firefighter who attended the scene said there were a number of "drunk people" in the park at the time of their arrival but proving the identity of the culprit would be extremely difficult.

This is so upsetting as the train area is in the babies and toddlers section of the playground.

I'm sure there are tears from many little people today.

Very sad. I know a small person that is very disappointed, as the train was a favorite. No more driving from Queens Park to Grandma's house.

I was there this morning supervising a small wannabe train driver, The drivers cab appeared fine. Fire does mean that the small person will not be able to carry as many passengers due to fire damage in carriage 2.
It would be brilliant if those who look after the park could fix the trip hazard which is the broken planks on the wooden ramp at the back of the train though - these holes have been there for several weeks
