A quick-thinking police officer put his skill and training to the test when he saved the life of a churchgoer.

This week’s local hero is Battle PCSO Demi Georghiou, 62, who sprung into action at a morning service at St Mary Magdalen, Hastings, in February.

After hearing a commotion at the front of the congregation, he went to see what was going on – only to discover an unconscious 87-year-old slumped in his seat, not breathing.

PCSO Georghiou said: “I lifted his head, cleared his airway and started compressions while asking others to call the emergency services.

“It was a natural reaction and most certainly came from my training as a PCSO.

“I performed CPR and rolled him into the recovery position.

“I’m not sure how I felt. I think I was just focused on the job and didn’t let the emotions of the incident get in the way.”

PCSO Georghiou saved the life of Neofitos Petri, from St Leonards, who had suffered a severe allergic reaction to medication. He was rushed to hospital by paramedics and later made a full recovery.

The hero officer, who was off-duty at the time of the drama, later visited Mr Petri and his wife at the hospital.

Mr Petri said: “I am hugely grateful to PCSO Georghiou for what he did for me. If it wasn’t for him I would not be here.”

Chief Inspector Warren Franklin, Rother district commander, said: “Demi Georghiou is an excellent ambassador for Sussex Police and there is no greater achievement than saving someone’s life.

“Demi, like countless colleagues, provides this commitment both on and off duty and is a credit to the community and the police.

“I wish Mr Petri a full recovery and am so glad there has been a positive impact made by Demi.”

PCSO Georghiou added: “I would advise anyone who hasn’t already to sign up to a first aid course. You never know how valuable it will be for you. I am so pleased Mr Petri is out of hospital and is recovering well at home with his wife. I look forward to seeing him back at church soon.”
