Fred the cat needs new home after developing severe allergies
A seven-year-old puss who lost all his fur after developing a severe reaction to fleas is looking for a home.
Black and white Fred was handed into the Cats Protection's National Cat Adoption Centre in Chelwood Gate, near Lewes, in February because his owners could no longer care for him.
Having previously been infested with fleas before arriving he had developed feline allergic dermatitis which caused him to lose most of his fur from his neck to tail.
After receiving treatment, Fred's fur has now finally started to re-grow although he still needs to wear a veterinary collar to stop him irritating sore areas.
Deputy manager of the centre Tania Marsh said: "Fleas can start off as a minor annoyance to cats but can quickly become a serious medical problem.
"In Fred's case he had become severely allergic which had caused intense scratching and eventually almost total hair loss.
"He had very large sore areas of skin but with the proper veterinary care these are now healing.
"Like all cats, Fred will need regular flea treatments to stop him being re-infested.
“There are many effective flea treatments available and vets are best placed to advise. They are simple to use and will prevent the sort of discomfort Fred has endured if used regularly.
Fred is a really lovely cat and is very affectionate. He needs a home where he can enjoy curling up on his owner's lap and getting made a fuss of. He's not keen on dogs but is otherwise very easygoing and will make a terrific pet."
