Traffic is being diverted following major subsidence on a seafront road in Brighton this morning.

Police rushed to the scene on Kingsway after reports that a 'five foot hole' had emerged without warning around 8am.

The area is suffering major delays and police have cordoned off the scene and closed the road.

Diversions have been set up with eastbound traffic diverted off the A259 up the B2185 Grand Avenue and The Drive to join the A270 Old Shoreham Road.

Westbound traffic is being diverted from the Aquarium roundabout up the A23 via London Road to the Old Shoreham Road.

Sussex Police were initially informed that there was "five foot hole" in the carriageway but upon arrival this was revealed to be a "depression" rather than a hole.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "It was discovered by workmen engaged in underground building work at the Fortune of War pub."

Watch a video interview with the Fortune of War manager:

Laurence Hill, manager of the Fortune of War, said: "We had builders working to shore up a fire exit at the back of the pub.

"They took out a part of the ceiling and then loads of rubble just came down.

"It looks like at some points there is nothing holding the road up at some points."

"No one was hurt and we are going to carry on trading as usual."
