Some of the world’s most famous landscapes feature in the 2014 Sand Sculpture Festival on Brighton seafront.

This year’s theme is ‘Around the World...in Sand’ and sees hand-carved sculptures erected at the Black Rock site using only sand and water.

Building on the success of last year, which was all themed around music in sand, organisers have promised a wide array of impressive artwork, with everything from the Tower of Pisa to the Great Pyramids, allowing visitors to take a walk through seven continents and photograph the world’s most famous landmarks, all in one location.

Alec Messchaert, a co-organiser of the event, which opens on Monday, said: “Of course there will be all sorts on offer for visitors but we also aim to work very closely with the community. We want to work with local businesses, schools and organisations.

"We learnt a lot from the visitors in 2013 and are ready to make 2014 bigger and better in every way.”

The work will be on display until the end of September and as well as getting to look at the sculptures, visitors will be able to watch live demonstrations, take part in sand sculpture workshops and take pictures.

There will also be a children’s sand pit, a cafe and a gift shop.

One of the artists is Nicola Wood, who also presents CBBC’s Deadly Art programme.

She said: “We are hugely excited about this festival. Brighton is such a vibrant, cultural city and I can’t wait to kick off 2014.

“We are planning a fantastic event, with something for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. We hope locals and holidaymakers alike will come to the exhibition and enjoy everything it has to offer.”

Geoffrey Bowden, chairman of Brighton and Hove City Council’s Economic Develop- ment and Culture Committee, said: “We’re confident this attraction will increase the numbers of people going to the eastern part of the seafront, and that other businesses there will benefit as a result.”

This year will also feature the Tremendous Tipi, a venue on the terrace next to the marina, with champagne and canapés being served.
