A man is fighting for his life after reportedly falling from a moving van while “ surfing” on its roof.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the accident in Charmandean Road, Broadwater,  Worthing last night.

The 26-year-old fell from the Volkswagen Transporter van at around 11.30pm and was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General hospital.

His condition this morning is described as critical.

Sussex Police say the casualty, who is from Lancing,  may have been on the roof of the vehicle and possibly 'surfing', when he fell.

However they say they are still trying to establish the exact circumstances.

The driver of the van, a 27-year-old from Goring, was arrested on suspicion of driving with alcohol above the prescribed limit, driving without due care and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

After being interviewed the man, was released on bail until  June 24 while enquiries continue.

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Stewart Goodwin, of the Arundel road policing unit, said: "We would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who may have information about exactly where the casualty was prior to being injured."

Anyone who has not yet spoken to officers is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk, quoting Operation Paisley.
