A girl's night out with a difference has raised more than £91,000 for a children's hospice.

About 800 people swapped a good night's sleep for a midnight stroll around the streets of Eastbourne in the annual Night to Remember midnight walk.

The event is held every year in aid of Chestnut Tree House near Arundel, which provides care and support to hundreds of life-limited children and their families across Sussex.

Proceedings began on Saturday night with a warm up session at the Sovereign Centre in Royal Parade before the walk was officially started by Eastbourne mayor Janet Coles.

People either did a ten mile route or went for a shorter four mile option, which was introduced for the first time this year so more people could take part.

Many participants had special reasons for walking for the hospice, including Zoe Gilbert, who lost her son Connor in 2006.

She said: “Chestnut Tree House will always be very special to me. Taking part in the Night to Remember allows me to give something back to this fantastic charity.”

Hospice director of children's services, Linda Perry, said: “The event has been another massive achievement for both the walkers and the charity.

“The money raised over the past five years has now broken the £380,000 mark and has helped us provide vital care for local sick children and their families right across East and West Sussex.

“We need to raise an incredible £6,850 each day to provide all our care services, both at the hospice and out in the community in families’ own homes.

“The amount raised at this year’s Night to Remember is the equivalent of 13 days of care and will make a real difference to local life-limited children and families.

“The success of the event would not have been possible without the help of 115 volunteers who marshalled the route, registered the walkers, served them breakfast and encouraged them every step of the way.”
