An arrest was made within minutes of the police launching their new drink-driving crackdown.

Liam Wells, 25, was arrested after his car was stopped in The Green, St Leonards, at 12.10am on 1 June - just ten minutes after Sussex Police launched Operation Dragonfly.

Wells, of Beecham Place, St Leonards, will appear at Hastings Magistrates' Court on 16 July charged with drink-driving.

Operation Dragonfly is the force's month-long campaign to tackle drink and drug driving across the county.

Superintendent Jane Derrick, the head of the force's roads policing unit, said: "We warned everyone that we would not tolerate motorists driving after drinking or taking drugs but clearly some people do not listen to warnings.

"We will continue to catch and arrest drink and drug drivers throughout the month. If you are considering getting behind the wheel you are making a choice of whether or not to put your life and the lives of other people in danger.

"The answer is simple - drink or drive."

Five other people from Sussex will appear in court after just two days of the campaign.

Four more drivers were arrested and questioned before being released on bail while officers carry out further inquiries.

A 50-year-old woman from Polegate, a 49-year-old man from Uckfield, a 48-year-old woman from Worthing and a 29-year-old man from St Leonards were stopped on suspicion of drink-driving offences.
