New Sussex Police chief constable announced

The Argus: New Sussex Police chief constable announced as Giles York New Sussex Police chief constable announced as Giles York

Giles York has been chosen as the preferred candidate to be Sussex Chief Constable.

The announcement follows a rigorous recruitment process, which began in April, following the retirement of former Chief Constable, Martin Richards.

Giles York has been temporary Chief Constable for Sussex Police since March 2014. He was previously Deputy Chief Constable for six years, with responsibility for the force's performance, engagement, reputation, change and risk management.

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: "Mr York has exceptional experience of policing, having held a number of positions in senior leadership.

"Throughout the recruitment process he showed a passion for Sussex, its people and police force.

"He also demonstrated a strong commitment to developing partnership working across the county as well as engaging with residents to meet their policing needs and keep Sussex safe."

The Police and Crime Panel will be formally notified of the proposed appointment in due course. This will be subject to a confirmation hearing at their meeting on June 27.

Giles York said: "I am delighted to have been recommended as the next Chief Constable of Sussex Police.

"Subject to confirmation by the Police and Crime Panel, I look forward to working with the Police & Crime Commissioner and everyone in the Force to deliver the priorities in the Police & Crime Plan and ensure that the people of Sussex have access to the best possible policing services when they need them."

Perhaps an external candidate would have been better. Mr York has been with Sussex Police for a number of years and will have nothing new to deliver.

Not saying he is not or has not done a good job but staying in the same place for so long means you miss opportunities that a fresh set of eyes would bring.

So Katy Bourne tells us that he's good at "engaging with residents to meet their policing needs." Really? Tell that to people whose parks have been taken over by caravans, and left in total mess afterwards.

A totally uninspired appointment, judged on his areas of responsibility over the past six years. Was there really no-one else better?

No problem with Giles YORK. Please, Labour Party get rid of the Crime Commissioners, as you promised, if you win the 2015 General election. They are a waste of time and money.

And they are good at making decisions in similar areas such as locally elected mayors? They would like to remove this role, but historically attempt to force others to accept the implementation of a similarly unpopular role! At least the aim of the crime commissioners was to temper the role if the unelected chief constable.

Great news for Sussex and Brighton: a decent humane person with a strong ethos of caring and service gets the job. Pleased the PCC has made the right appointment
