Dog killed in trailer accident
A man has told how his beloved pet dog was flung from his bicycle trailer to her death.
Five-year-old terrier poodle cross Rosa Barks fell from her owner Jerry Swift’s bike trailer and under the wheels of a lorry.
Heartbroken Mr Swift, of Preston Circus, Brighton, said he wanted to warn others of the dangers of using bike trailers. He said: “I wanted to make sure other people don’t make the same mistake I did.
“My dog wasn’t tethered into the carriage. I came up to the Old Steine in traffic and the carriage wheel clipped the curb and she fell out and under the wheels of a lorry.
“The traffic was heavy and the lights changed. It moved off just as one wheel of her carriage hit the kerb. I made a terrible mistake.”
Mr Swift said he only bought the dog trailer a few weeks ago and had taken Rosa out in it a few times, but he had not strapped her in because he did not want to put her off.
Mr Swift has now laid flowers as a tribute to his beloved pet.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “We were called at 12.20pm on Saturday after a collision in Old Steine, Brighton, involving a lorry and a dog. The animal was in a trailer being pulled behind a bicycle close to the junction with St James's Street when the dog fell into the road.
“It was then hit by a lorry and died.”
