Thai restaurant is celebrating a new hygiene rating

The Argus: Thai restaurant is celebrating a new hygiene rating Thai restaurant is celebrating a new hygiene rating

A Thai restaurant has started with a clean slate after going from a hygiene rating of zero stars to five in only a matter of months.

In February The Argus reported on how the Sukhothai Palace in Middle Street, Brighton, had been hit with a zero rating from the Foods Standards Agency.

It was one of just five out of the city’s 2,555 restaurants and takeaways to be given the lowest possible rating.

The zero rating requires owners to make an urgent improvement – and that is exactly what staff at the restaurant achieved.

The restaurant received five stars when re-inspected by the Food Standards Agency – the highest possible rating.

Five stars indicates standards of cleanliness on the premises are now “very good”.

Aoy Connacher, the owner, said: “We are very proud to have received five stars – it is the result of a lot of work from the team and reflects the high standards we have always aimed for.”

“Customers can step through our doors knowing they will get not only the best in Thai cuisine but also the best in service and hygiene."

it is high time that any premises receiving a 0 rating is immediately closed until improvements have taken place, premises receiving 1 or 2 also should be under draconian rules to get them up to date within a short time period, the public need protection from these sorts of premises, they would not be able to open in the majority of EU countries, it is also time that any food outlet providing tables or bars for food to be eaten at where required to provide customer toilets, to many fast food outlets are back in the 70's with, health & safety, hygiene, paying taxes etc and employing those that should not be working, and minimum wages does not exist to them either oh and I do not mean the 1970's but the 1870's they should not be able to trade without a current gas safety certificate, electrical safety certificate & public liability insurance, start checking those and 50% of more of the less salubrious outlets would be shut, add checking delivery drivers are fully insured for take away deliveries would see 95% of delivery drivers no longer working.

With Kebabs shops you are more likely to get food poisoning from the salad than the meat.

They must have swept up the rat droppings from the kitchen floor.

So restaurant gets a 0 hygiene rating then crows about how great they are when they sort out the problem and the Argus gives them a free advert.

No decent restauranteur would ever score 0 in a hygiene exam in the first place.

We should be adopting not only very strict procedures on Hygiene but also we need to start being strict on the quality of food that is being prepared, presented, served and leaving the doors of these places. You can have the best Hygiene in the world, but if the quality of food and source for example meats, fish cannot be properly identified, and the food is coated in fats, it really is doing nothing in promoting healthy eating, nor is is it doing anything to stop the obesity problem we have in this country. Got to say there is more growth in this type of business that any other in this country these days. How many more take away's do we honestly need in this country. It must be very good for the unemployment figures.

I've seen many restaurants displaying 4 star hygiene rating stickers on their doors. I even saw one brave food place with a 3 star sticker on their front window. Unsurprisingly, they were empty.
