Police cracking down on phantom offenders

Foreign and unregistered vehicles are hard to trace

Foreign and unregistered vehicles are hard to trace

First published in News by

Hundreds of foreign and unregistered vehicles are getting away with motoring offences each year because police cannot trace them.

Sussex Police say 500 motorists have committed offences such as speeding and skipping red lights – but have gone unpunished because officers are unable to identify who is behind the wheel.

Police struggle to trace the culprits with foreign number plates and cannot access motoring databases abroad meaning the force loses an estimated £40,000 a year.

In Brighton and Hove, one foreign-registered vehicle has been flashed by speed cameras four times in a few months but police have been unable to find and prosecute the driver.

Across the county during the same period, 16 individual drivers have been captured on cameras committing multiple offences without punishment.

Police chiefs have now launched a crack-down by creating a ‘hot list’ of unregistered and foreign law-breaking vehicles that will be stopped if they are flagged up on police systems.

Traffic police will be scrambled to intercept any vehicles that pass police patrols or flag up on automatic number plate recognition cameras.

PC Andrew Huggett, of Sussex Police, said the initiative was the first of its kind in the country.

He said: “In Sussex a small percentage of road offences that we detect have to be abandoned because we cannot identify the driver responsible. We have to ask ourselves if there is a darker reason for these drivers wanting to remain anonymous.”

Unregistered or foreign-registered vehicles with offences will be stopped and the drivers questioned.

If the drivers deny being the owners they could face arrest, confiscation and prosecution.

Sussex Police said drivers who bought vehicles under false details were able to avoid prosecution for speeding or going through red lights.

Last year, The Argus revealed that Brighton and Hove City Council only received payment for 1.4% of parking tickets issued to vehicles with foreign number plates in 2012, worth more than £774,550.

If you see a vehicle being driven antisocially or suspiciously, text details to 65999 or report it at www.operation crackdown.co.uk.

A headline figure of a lost £40,000. Blimey, what a huge figure in today's world! So the police are going to have a major initiative and crackdown using up more resources that could be used to track down proper criminals like that nice bloke who has just absconded from Ford Open Prison. Bet we're all glad about this. Compared with the amount brought in by B&H Council from parking fines/fees and speeding tickets in the county this £40k is a piddling amount. The police are only doing it and shouting about it cos they know that the public will warm to the idea of catching up with all these Johnny Foreigners who are getting away with a few liberties. Typical. Get out there and catch real criminals like drug dealers, human traffickers and violent offenders.

by advertising this will it not make some of them leave the car out the way and thus avoiding being caught behind the wheel. they should of not mentioned it and just went ahead to take these people off the road and into court.maybe even catching a few illegal immigrants as well killing two birds with one stone

Compulsory bike insurance - not a bad idea.

From what I have seen on the news and TV a lot of
"these Johnny Foreigners"
are "real criminals like drug dealers, human traffickers
and violent offenders."

Fine in theory; but aren't you deflecting something. I don't come across many drug dealers, human traffickers or violent offenders in my day to day life, but I do come across speeders and tailgaters on a day to day basis. I'm sure I'll get a few thumbs down. Is the truth too close to handle, or am I lying? Anyone there?

500 motorists have committed offences and what about the number of cyclists that have committed traffic violations and skipped red lights and they are losing a staggering £40,000 a year well if the police nicked some of these offending cyclists that may help towards the short full of the £40,000 a year and can we also use this number 65999 or website to report these unscrupulous cyclists who commit numerous traffic violations… sorry just thought I’d have my poke because lets be honest its always the motorists offenders but seeing quite a lot of cyclists offend its about time the police did there bit to stamp it out but going by what the offices that work for the Sussex police commissioner apparently they have not got the recourses to stop cyclists who commit road traffic offences i.e. you see them riding through red lights or riding at night with no lights and the police just let them get away with it why is that? Perhaps just to much paper work to fill out TUFF its your job do it or go get a job that dote need to much paper work filling out.

good ,why should we law abiding folk who tow the line in every respect be chastised with threats of bailiffs if we are a moments late paying out taxes or bills or parking fines when theres a good majority who buck the norm and get away with all conformity.i thought they had 12 months to change to brit registered motors ,grinds my gears these europeans invading our lands ,banging out loads of kids ,getting benefits left right and centre, undercutting local trades forcing them into impossible situations.i vehemently hate the new u.k with a passion.
