The driver of a car which crashed and killed a teenage passenger has been jailed.

Harry Smith, 18, of Haleybridge Walk, Tangmere, was today jailed for four years after admitting death by dangerous driving and two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving in a fatal collision.

Chichester Crown Court heard Smith was driving a Vauxhall Corsa when it came off the road and overturned at Halnaker in September 2013.

Passenger Jasmine Elkasmi, 16, of Carlton Avenue, Bognor, died of her injuries and two other 16-year-old girl passengers were seriously injured - one being left paralysed from the waist down.

Judge Christopher Parker QC also disqualified Smith from driving for four years and ordered him to take an extended re-test before holding a licence again.

Sergeant Paul Wood, of the Arundel road policing unit, said: "Smith was 17 at the time of the collision and he had only held his driving licence for about seven weeks.

"He had been stopped by police before the collision on a number of occasions due to the manner of his driving and he had been issued with a section 59 warning, which meant that if he had been stopped again, his vehicle would have been seized.

"A girl died as a result of his dangerous driving and two other girls were left with serious injuries, one of them life-changing.”
