A giant mobile phone greeted commuters in Brighton as part of an awareness campaign.

The Brighton and Hove branch of Samaritans organised the ‘mobile phone’ to promote July as its Talk To Us month.

The message was that its phone lines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Louise, one of the volunteers, said: “We want people to realise that you don’t have to feel suicidal to call us. We will listen to every concern, no matter what.”

Jess Cotton, Network Rail suicide prevention officer, said: “The Victoria to Brighton route has the highest suicide rate in the country. More people are taking their lives on the railway than ever before. Each railway death costs the network £2.6 million and affects many more people.”

Network Rail has partnered with Samaritans, which has trained rail staff and given them the skills needed to approach vulnerable people. Call Samaritans on 08457 909090.
