Green Party hits back over “malicious” fraud claims

First published in News

THE GREEN Party is taking legal advice over “false and malicious” allegations that MP Caroline Lucas’s campaign team committed electoral fraud.

The claims were described as “nothing more than an attempt to smear the local Green Party” by chairwoman of the Brighton and Hove party Lisa Murray.

It follows serious allegations made by former Green Party treasurer and blogger Duncan Roy. Mr Roy, who blogs under the name Scrapper Duncan, claimed “almost every resource of the national party” was thrown into the Brighton Pavilion election – but that the expenditure was declared to the Electoral Commission as being spent elsewhere.

He said Ms Lucas had six officers working on her election campaign in 2010, some on pro rata wages of £30,000 and £40,000 a year – but just £1,903 staffing costs were declared to the Electoral Commission.

He wrote: “In private conversations, Green activists fall into two camps about this issue. “Either they clam up or they claim that, ‘we’re fighting the good fight, we’ve got to break the rules to get into the Westminster club’.

“It’s an argument that can only work with the converted.”

Former Green Party activist Mr Roy has courted controversy with his fierce attacks on political opponents and raised eyebrows when he announced he had left the Greens to re-join Labour.

In his blog he writes the allegations were originally made by Chris Barclay, an executive officer with the party, who has been suspended as part of disciplinary procedures.

It is believed Mr Barclay is the man behind a Twitter identity called Green Grass of Hove which has posted a series of cryptic tweets about Ms Lucas since the end of July.

Meanwhile, a separate blog published on the website PoliticalBetting.com in June claimed a poll commissioned by the Green Party had revealed that Ms Lucas was “a long way behind” Labour rival Purna Sen in the battle to retain her seat.

Ms Murray said the national party was investigating “a serious breach of confidence” including the leaking of confidential polling data by a former local executive officer, and behaviour deemed “incompatible with enjoying the status of a bona fide party member”.

She said no evidence had been produced to back up the allegations which were based on claims made by a “member of the party who is currently the subject of disciplinary proceedings”. She said the paperwork required was filled out in full and completed to the satisfaction of the Electoral Commission.

Ms Murray added: “The allegations relate to staff expenditure and take no account of the fact that campaign staff were employed by the Green Party nationally and working in other target constituencies as well as Brighton Pavilion for the duration of the election campaign.

“We intend to go beyond that which we are required to do by law and publish more detailed information, once we have fully considered the questions being raised.

“Given the high-profile nature of the 2010 general election campaign in Brighton Pavilion, it would be impossible for any of the fluctuating versions of these claims to be concealed from the public.”

The Electoral Commission said no allegation or complaint had been made on the matter. A spokeswoman said: “Any allegations we receive will be considered in line with our usual procedures.”

Caroline Lucas was contacted but could not be reached for comment.

Certainly saw everything but the kitchen sink thrown at the last election by the green party. Confettii levels of paper propaganda, hundreds of supporters bussed in for doorstep work and lashings of funding for consultants like Steve Hjars. How much that all cost to only end up with a minority council will make interesting reading. With Kitcat and Davey doing a runner rather than face the electorate will they have an appointment with Inspector Knacker before they are run out of the city? Reap as you sow chaps.

Note to Ms. Murray: I know less than nothing regarding these allegations but feel the need to reassure Ms. Murray that nothing, and I mean nothing could supersede the damage done to Brighton & Hove by the Green Party during their tenure in 'a smearing' contest.
It's not all been bad, but even where good, the fanatical fervour, insensitivity and arrogance have served nothing than to incense the majority of residents to an unparalleled level of utter incandescence and all too frequently the laughing stock of the wider population!

Not a fan of St Caroline. A typical elitist hobbyist politician. However it should be remembered that Scrapper Duncan's personal attacks on Emma Daniel were so vile that the Green Party disowned him. And Emma was supposedly a friend of his but because he wanted the greens to take Hanover and she stood as the Labour candidate he launched a most extraordinary series of attacks on her. So he has form for lashing out at people. What is troubling for the greens though is that he seems to still be in the know about green politics and usually idolises St Caroline.
I'd still like to know the percentage of postal votes the greens got compared to other parties in both the local and national elections.

Scrapper Duncan does come out with some garbage. As someone has already mentioned his personal attacks on Emma Daniel were extremely viscous and spiteful.

But it seems he does have a point here on election expenditure though. It was very clear early in the campaign that Brighton Pavilion was the only seat they had any chance of winning. It is therefore wholly believable that these Green employees spent nearly all their time on this constituency.

I look forward to the 'detailed information' that the Green party are now on record as promising to publish. I hope the Argus will follow up on this.

I think people are confusing a small army of volunteers donating their time for nothing and the invisibility of the other parties in the 2010 election. It will be the same come May 2015.

If there is evidence of overspending then the Electoral Commission is the place to make a complaint.

How about a "Brighton Kitcat (Green) and Theobold (Tory) 'Debt Clock'" - to count (probably upwards) outside the i360? I understand that weather like today and the rest of the week won't impact upon the huge profits from 2000 A DAY or so extra visitors to Brighton that have been claimed to justify the £36million spend?
Will there be a helpline number for residents to call if it's empty most of the time but the council still claims it's doing really, really, really well and everything is absolutely fine?
Reading the news does nothing to inspire the slightest confidence.

@Zeta Function - unfortunately they don't even have a leader - they are just a mish-mash of ideological activists grouped under the green 'watermelon' flag and are effectively allowed to do whatever they want if they convince similar ideologists of the value of their intentions.

As examples - gender-neutral toilets - the unenforced and unenforceable badly implemented 20mph zones - the Old Shoreham Road cycle lane - introducing Living Wage during a period of austerity - the refuse strike - and the new Open market,

Could we really imagine such a group of naive incompetents actually running the country?

At least, based upon their miserable growth figures in the recent elections, probably bolstered by their embarrassment of a council and the associated MP, that we can just tell them that 'we do not give a ****' to the rantings of a group of demented ****.

I wasn't talking about you denying being a Labour member. It was only recently you finally 'came out' on here as a Green Party member and it was to that I was referring.

As for speeding, as far as I'm concerned I'm not. It was perfectly safe to do 30 mph two years ago in those areas and most of the time it is perfectly safe to do so now. Only because the council have installed an artificial and unenforceable new 'limit' doesn't make it so.

Only because the council have installed an artificial and unenforceable new 'limit' doesn't make it so.[/p][/quote]So you ARE speeding. What counts as recent for "coming out"? 2010? I think that is when I first mentioned my membership. Might have been earlier. HJarrs

I see Jarrs is up to his usual tricks, only 2 days ago I had to point out that while accusing others of not reading posts he was guilty of that very sin himself.

It all comes down to the Greens perennial problem lack of integrity and this whole story really just underlines that.

I shall be another very happy personn next May when they finally disappear for good

.......meanwhile residents wondered when their recycling would be collected, the 15,000 on the housing list wondered why it cost £650 for one person to stay in a shipping container while the police investigate the council's housing department, wildlife lovers wondered when Caroline would return from Balcombe to protect the city's parks from diesel vans and bewildered residents wondered why no one in the council seemed to give a toss about the shocking number of people openly sleeping on pavements in the city in broad daylight begging from shocked tourists while Cllr Davey busily attended the launch of a light-up bus timetable for the millionaires of Preston Park enjoying their free bus passes while school routes are axed.
And of course we can all celebrate the very important campaign to stop ladies taking up page 3 modelling.
Is it any wonder the public have had enough of this lot and also some of the invisible councillors in the Tory and Labour groups.

Hjarrs you say you don't need to remind us every post that you were a labour party member. How come you vilified me for supporting labour but not mentioning it each time I post?! Anyway I am sure these allegations are false. Caroline Jason Ben phelim and hjarrs are kind honest exemplary and perfect. (Has anyone seen my medication . . .)

What Jarrs doesn't seem to realise is that he is part of the whole problem of the green council. He is only ever willing to get into an argument with people with his silly little made up words. He's a classic example of a spokesman a political party really doesn't need, every post he puts in the Argus gives me and I'm sure a lot of other readers just one more of the many reasons that we will not vote the Green party back into Brighton. jarrs take a bit of advice, if you want to discuss things fine, but is all you are going to do is argue with every point people make, a lot perfectly genuine criticisms of what the greens a doing, then do your party a favour and keep quiet

Whoever said politics is a dirty game was wrong... it's utterly filthy.

I don't appreciate the wool being pulled over my eyes and am sure I'm not the only one here to be bored to death with the anti Green propaganda.

I've never considered voting for them but the behavior of the other parties is tempting me to support the Greens next time round.

If anyone is guilty of fraud it’s the B&H GREEN Councilors as far as Caroline Lucas’s go’s I would say it’s more likely to be the former Green Party treasurer Duncan Roy that is guilty of fraud and what of all the other GREEN supporters namely Tony Greenstein who runs a Welfare Rights Advice Center in Hollingdean someone ort to take a closer look in to his finances!

Why? Are you making an allegation against Tony Greenstein that you can back up? You seem to be alluding to something here. Care to spell it out, please?

Tony Greenstein is a man who has sacrificed his own welfare and dedicated his life to helping others. He went to university to gain a law degree in order to be able to get legal aid to better help his clients.

Put up or shut up.

Amen to that! Not hard to guess that the other political parties are behind the bizarre anti-Green trolling is it.

So anyone who questions the actions of your favourite political party are 'trolling' and shouldn't be allowed to do it?
