Bingo ejects Tourette’s sufferer over Savile shout

Louis Bunn, who has Tourette’s Syndrome

First published in News by

A TOURETTE’S sufferer was thrown out of his local bingo hall after shouting “Jimmy Savile’s got my leg”.

Louis Bunn, 23, from Eastbourne, said his tics got the better of him after an elderly player began mocking him at the Leo Leisure Bingo Hall.

Mr Bunn, who owns the I Vintage Coffee company in the town, is a keen bingo player and regularly goes to the hall in Pevensey Road.

He was enjoying a game on August 24, when his involuntary tics, which typically involve shouting and swearing, caused a stir among other players.

In a bid to highlight the condition, he spoke out about the incident. He said he started off with inoffensive shouts of “whoop” “wow” and “all the sixes”.

However, when the caller and other players mocked him, he belted out more offensive phrases.

As he became more stressed by the episode, the tics got worse and expletives were soon ringing round the bingo hall.

One of the other players told him to shut up as he was distracting her.

He tried to respond by informing her of his condition – but instead he involuntarily swore at her.

He followed this up with his Jimmy Savile remark, but had no idea where it had come from.

With that, he was thrown out the club by bingo hall owner Peter Brown.

When The Argus called at the weekend we were told Mr Brown would not be available to comment.

However, speaking to a national newspaper, he said he was aware of Mr Bunn’s condition and that he had never had a problem with him.

He added that he had had a complaint that Mr Bunn had jumped from his seat and been very aggressive towards an old lady.

He also alleged Mr Bunn had been aggressive to staff and spat and sworn at him.

Mr Bunn said he has doubled his medication since the stressful incident.

As the report says, there is two sides to every story.

If he was aggressive and spitting, then yes he needs to leave the building, but if he was just shouting involuntary words and tics, then the owner should have been more tolerant.

The problem with Tourettes, is it can be funny for people who have never experienced it. It doesn't make them ignorant people, just unaware.

However, the Torettes guy has his own business so seems a decent chap to me. He can't help swearing can he, unlike many people who frequent bingo halls !

Why is it that people that have anti-social behavioural problems always have a good excuse, shouting out stupid phrases can be overlooked but threatening and spitting at senior citizens is just not the case.
This person may have his own business (and I bet he doesn't speak or act to his clients in this way) but intimidating an old person just proves him to be a mindless bully, - even though he hides behind TOURETTE'S

How ignorant are you?

No one hides behind Tourettes.

The same as someone with Alzheimers who decides to stop washing and changing their clothes - would you insult them as well?

Medical conditions can affect anyone - no one chooses to become ill.

So he's a regular there.

I suspect that most of the people going there are regulars, too.

They cannot fail to be aware of his condition, and it's plain that he's generally welcome (or at least tolerated).

So why was this particular session so upsetting for everyone? I think it's because he went OTT, using his condition as an excuse.

Louis Bunn is a sociopath. A fraudulent, theiving, lying criminal. My partner and I lost over £1000 when he posed as the Landlord of a property he was renting, illegally subletted a room to us and then moved out overnight, taking with him our rent and deposit before disappearing. We managed to take him to court and 2 years later we're still waiting for the £500 he was ordered to pay us. If ou look this story up on the Metro you will see comments from other people who have been stung by this waste of space.

If he has tourettes now he didnt have it 2 years ago and believe me he's a violent, attention seeking cretin.

Removing Louis Bunn from the scope of this story and what he may or may not of done, the attitude of some people on here towards people with Tourette's Syndrome is absolutely disgusting. I assume Autism is bad parenting and ADHD is too much sugar for you vile people?

Ignoring the fact that this person may or may not have a history - remove Louis Bunn from the context of this altogether - Tourette's is a recognised disability and as such is covered under the Disability Discrimination Act. Meaning that if a (genuine) Tourette's sufferer was ejected from somewhere like a Bingo hall for swearing, the Bingo Hall would be breaking the law. Comments like "anti-social behavioural problems always have a good excuse" are just the height of ignorance.

It's all very well taking the side of disabled people rights, people shouldn't be discriminated against, I agree, but a bingo hall is a place of gambling, a place where people pay money to sit in a quiet hall and listen to a caller read out the numbers. Everyone is expected to be quiet. If players can't hear the numbers being called because someone is shouting, they could be losing thousands of pounds and of course they would blame the managers of the bingo hall because they have the right to ask the noisy people to leave. Why should someone be allowed to ruin bingo for everyone just because he has tourettes? If you went to the cinema and someone with tourettes shouted over the whole movie, should that be tolerated? That's a lesser example because thousnads of pounds are not at stake in a cinema. As a paraplegic person doesn't go hiking, perhaps a person with tourettes should avoid places where people are expected to be quiet. Realistically equality can only go so far, people do have to take responsibility for their own disabilities.
