SCHOOLS and a community centre have been targeted in a spate of lead thefts and attempted thefts.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a spike in incidents in Shinewater, Langney, near Eastbourne, since Thursday August 28.

A Sussex Police spokesman said many of the attempts had been made at night, with quantities of stripped lead ready for removal found in some cases.

Acting Sergeant Jon Attfield, of the Langney Neighbourhood Policing Team, said recovered lead was being examined.

He added: "These thefts not only have a financial impact on our schools and community services, but can also affect children's education, closing facilities while repairs are carried out."
