Mineola, Tuesday.

A JAMAICAN immigrant accused of going on a deadly shooting rampage on

a Long Island commuter train has today been indicted on 93 counts.

If convicted, 36-year-old Colin Ferguson faces up to 175 years in

prison. ''It's not quite infinity, but it will do,'' said Nassau County

District Attorney Denis Dillon.

Six people were killed and 19 wounded when Ferguson allegedly opened

fire at random on a Long Island Rail Road train December 7.

Ferguson's papers showed his deep hatred of what he saw as a racist

society, criticising whites, Asians, and conservative blacks.

The charges include civil rights violations, alleging that Ferguson

shot his victims because of their race, colour, religion, or national

origin.

The indictment includes 12 counts of second-degree murder, two for

each of those who died in the fusillade of bullets from his powerful 9mm

pistol.

For each of those killed, Ferguson is charged with intentional murder

and murder ''showing a depraved indifference to human life''.

Ferguson has pleaded not guilty. He has not contested a psychiatrist's

finding that he is mentally fit to stand trial.--Reuter.
