A DAREDEVIL granny recovering from cancer is abseiling down the front of a prestigious hotel for charity.

Jeaninne Brett will scale down the facade of The Grand hotel on June 14 with her grandsons Ben and Lewis Bradford.

Mrs Brett, of Westdene, Brighton, was diagnosed with breast cancer on Christmas Eve last year and, having had her operation in February, has now been given the all-clear by her doctor for her high-flying stunt.

Mrs Brett will be 83 when she dons her harness, helmet and ropes to take on the feat with Ben, 12, and Lewis, 10.

She told The Argus: “The doctor just said, ‘Better you than me – you’re fit enough so go for it and good luck’.”

Her daughter, Belinda Bradford, described her mother, originally from France, as “a bit of a daredevil”.

Mrs Brett said: “I’m not frightened at all. I love the challenge.

“After my cancer, I wanted to do this for charity. It was something I always wanted to do.”

She said thinking positive helped with her recovery.

Mrs Brett added: “I can’t sit still – I’m always doing something, walking, gardening, I prefer to be on the move.

“I used to be a gymnast and I like anything with a competitive element.”

Her tips for others her age are to “keep active and positive”.

“Don’t just sit and moan about things,” she said.

To add to her torrid early start to the year, Mrs Brett’s husband Monty was ill in hospital over Christmas and New Year, though is now feeling better.

Mr Brett joked: “She hopes to see France from the top of The Grand.”

Mrs Brett gained her head for heights while on a hot air balloon ride with her family.

Once her abseil is complete, Mrs Brett plans to follow it up with a zipwire ride.

“Any sort of challenge and I will do it,” she said. “I just want good weather on the day.”

Through her endeavours she hopes to raise money for Prostate Cancer, Blind Veterans and British Heart Foundation.

Background

As well as a head for heights, a long-standing love could be a key ingredient in our daredevil’s appetite for a challenge.

In December last year we reported that Monty and Jeaninne Brett celebrated 60 years of marriage.

The couple fell for each other when they crossed paths at The Royal Hotel in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, in 1953.

They married a year later and moved to Brighton in 1963. The couple have three children, six grandchildren and four great- grandchildren, many of whom still live nearby.
