THE wife of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown presented a UK preview of a film starring Hollywood stars on the power of girls' education.

Sarah Brown presented Girl Rising at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts yesterday.

It tells the stories of nine girls from nine countries, narrated by nine renowned actresses.

Actresses Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep are among the stars featured.

It was screened as part of an event hosted by charity Plan UK.

Mrs Brown said: "We live in an era in which a girl can be shot for daring to go to school with her friends."
