FROM 1902 to 1997 the Goldstone was the home of Brighton and Hove Albion.

But 20 years ago, the Seagulls played for the final time at the Hove stadium, beating Doncaster Rovers 1-0.

After its closure, there were many turbulent seasons during which the club sought a new place to call home.

The Amex, which Albion moved into in 2011, has been perfect for the club and is considered one of the best stadiums in the division. But the Goldstone will always be home for most Albion fans.

We chose eight of our favourite images from the Goldstone days ahead of this afternoon’s commemorative event at the Theatre Royal in Brighton.

The first photograph (top left and working clockwise) shows comedian Norman Wisdom providing some half- time entertainment in 1965. It was the height of his popularity, so it was quite a coup to have him at the Goldstone. We’re not too sure what he was doing but it looks as if he is either mid joke or about to head the ball.

The second image shows the tall frame of former Liverpool striker David Fairclough, who was at the ground for a fitness test. He never played for the Albion but the photo encapsulates football in the 1980s. From his tight curls to his even tighter Adidas shorts, the image will bring back memories for many fans.

The next photograph is an iconic one. It shows the pitch invasion following the final whistle of the last match at the Goldstone.

The year was 1997 and Albion were playing Doncaster Rovers in a game they had to win to move out of the relegation zone.

The Seagulls pulled it off with a nail-biting 1-0 victory. The following week they drew at Hereford, which ensured their safety.

The next photo is a classic from the late 1950s and shows Dave Sexton and Tommy Dixon trying to get on the end of a cross in a match against Bristol City.

Bottom right shows the moment Albion scored in the final game while the photo next to it shows TV cameras in 1979. Just look at the state of the pitch – you certainly wouldn’t get that at the Amex.

The second to last image is a curious one. It shows Albion striker Charlie Livesey running out in 1966. Why there is a bagpiper there we don’t know.

The final photograph is perhaps our favourite. It was taken on May 8, 1979 and shows Chris Cattlin (left) and Brian Horton celebrating the Albion winning the then Division Two title. Hopefully we will be seeing similar scenes at Albion’s new home this May.
