THE sky over Brighton has been filled with palls of smoke from major fires on many occasions over the years.

It has also seen its fair share of memorable firework displays for a variety of occasions.

Among the fires pictured above is a blaze that caused considerable damage to the Bennetts Hardware store in North Road in 1983.

Firefighters had to evacuate the whole building as there were residents living above at the time.

In 1987, two fires, pictured above, also wreaked havoc.

The foam shop fire in North Road and the blaze at Kemp Town Books in St George’s Road both attracted crowds of onlookers as firefighters tackled the flames.

Can you remember how bad any of these blazes were or do you know of other fires that caused more damage than those shown above?

Perhaps you were at the scene of one of the blazes and saw the firefighters in action.

If so what memories do you have of the incident?

Other blazes that stick in the minds of locals are the West Pier fires of 2003.

The pier gradually collapsed during the early 21st century.

Major sections then collapsed in late 2002 and two fires in March and May 2003 left little of the original structure.

Subsequently, English Heritage declared it to be beyond repair.

Do you have any memories of visiting the West Pier before it became unusable?

Brighton and Hove has many memorable firework spectaculars, notably the lions’ displays at the County Ground.

The Hangleton and Knoll Festival finale in 1990 also stands out in the memory.

Our archive picture, far left, captures some of the magic of that event.
