Crawley's defending gives Barker a headache
RICHIE BARKER has vowed to address Crawley’s defensive problems after they were dumped out of the Capital One Cup by Cheltenham. The Reds threw away a 3-1 advantage to lose 4-3 after extra time away to the League Two outfit.
It followed some defensive questions in Saturday’s League One opener against Coventry when Crawley also squandered a two-goal lead only for Mike Jones to seal a 3-2 win.
Barker said: “It is hard to take. That is twice in four days we have been two goals up. There was some poor decision making and a lack of guts to go and put your head in a place where it might get hurt.
“There was some fantastic football and some good goals and we always looked a threat going forward but unfortunately so did they.
“We did really well at set-pieces last year and we are actually a little bit physically bigger this year. It is a concern because it is not tough to mark somebody and if it is in your area to go and head it. “It is something we need to address pretty quickly.”
New loan signing Luke Rooney made his debut as a substitute for the last 19 minutes of extra time.
Barker added: “He looked bright when he came on. He has been chomping at the bit and you would expect him to be full of enthusiasm.”
