Albion held at The Amex

The Argus: Frustration for Ashley Barnes as Albion can't break the deadlock (photo Simon Dack) Frustration for Ashley Barnes as Albion can't break the deadlock (photo Simon Dack)

Albion were held to a 0-0 draw by Huddersfield on an afternoon of frustration at The Amex.

The Seagulls dominated the second period in particular against a result Town side.

But two moments involving Ashley Barnes summed up their afternoon.

The striker saw the ball bounce off him and over a gaping goal as he followed up when Alex Smithies parried a Kemy Agustien header after David Lopez had crossed.

Another pinpoint delivery from the Spaniard teed up Barnes coming in from beyond the far post. But, as home fans rose to celebrate, his header went wide.

Barnes also saw a first-half header – which seemed to deflect off James Vaughan - hacked off the line by Martin Paterson.

Vaughan felt he should have had a first-half penalty for a shove in his back by Adam El-Abd.

A game we should have won. Huddersfield were poor and we failed to be clinical when opportunities came along.

Not one of our better performances, but good to see Ulloa back along with Kemmy and Kaz.

I thought El abd played well and prefer hi to Greer at the back.

Could not make it today but listened to the game. For me seemed like 2 points drop and goostd opportunity to gain all 3. I would like to understand how Barnes missed his chances as the commentators did not seem impressed but I cannot pass judgement as I was not there. I need the next 2 games away to be wins please Albion cos all the results were ok today and I believe we would have been in the playoffs with a win. I don't know if this was a good thing or bad thing as there may be less focus on us just outside the playoffs

Huddersfield were poor, well that might be true but they did manage to get two shots on target, oddly enough exactly the same number that we managed. Considering that we had over 60% possession in each half of the match, perhaps we were somewhat poor too.

Definitely two points dropped. If we have promotion aspirations these are games that must be won. Our form at the Amex is not promotion form whereas our away form is. All we need do is start being consistent at home and continuing the good progress away. We are a little bit too predictable at home and teams know exactly how to frustrate us and grind our results. That needs to be fixed. If we fix it for the 2nd half of the season we will have a great chance of the playoffs.

Derby and Burnley are the in-form sides at the moment. Derby look completely unstoppable. Then we have Leicester, QPR and Forest who will definitely be claiming top 6 spots. We need to do better at home to stand a chance.

Mmm, the team promised so much and played some lovely passing football (Agustein a big improvement on Crofts) but... the finishing (and the final ball) was appalling (often delivered into the crowd or the goalie's arms or blocked by the defender with players crying out for a pull back to the edge of the box or stood up for a far post header). I don't recall their goalie having a save to make. Luckily Huddersfield were very poor too otherwise we may have been looking at 3 points dropped rather than 2.

Special mention for Bruno today though, really played superbly as was my MOM.

I know it is seasonal to have a Donkey in your cast this time of the year but do we really have to persevere playing one at centre forward ?
Two points dropped again at The Amex, a line up devoid of bite.
We have the the best centre forward in the league, a proven goal scoring midfielder and a tricky, goal scoring winger and we leave them on the bench for 80% of the match.
No doubt Oscar will come on the radio and say we were the better side, we created lots of opportunities, but again failed to take them. All true !!
We have no bite and I could not see who was going to score for us today when that team got announced.
It was a great crowd for a game at this time of the year in the most atrocious of conditions and again they are treated to a dull, bland display of keep ball with no end product.
We deserve to see better and today was a great opportunity missed to make up ground on our rivals. A poor start to the Christmas programme.

We won't get many games live on tv if we keep serving up this dire tripe. How many times have we been talked up as promotion candidates and then follow it up with boring nil nils or defeats. Thought the atmosphere was poor again, this club needs some impetus, that can only come from blooms cheque book, but thats been firmly closed for the last couple of years. Huddersfield were there for the taking, quite a poor outfit that don't travel well, but once again we fluffed our lines. Excite us with top quality new players please before the rot really takes hold. Or is it already too late.

Excellent deliveries in from David was one of the highlights today of a 0:0 along with an excellent attacking performance from Bruno. Not sure why the sponsors could possibly have thought Bridcutt was man of the match - almost certainly one of his poorest performances for us in the past 3 - 4 seasons. It works better with Ince pushed up and Bridcutt in the holding role.

Lua Lua and Ulloa both needed to be brought on 15 - 20 minutes earlier and a shame none of Barnes's 3 chances went in as any one of them would probably have secured the 3 points. Just 2 shots on target at home against Huddersfield says what happened with our opportunity taking - 14 chances in all.

Good decent performances by Agustien with some excellent incisive passes and Ward

What a frustrating game,we never really got going,Buckley had a nightmare didn't have a clue what he was doing with the ball, no purpose or end result. Bridcutt mom, the prawn sandwich brigade must have mixed him up with either Bruno or Lopez who were both excellent, their link up play provided the best of us going forward.
As for Barnes, the one over the bar had to be seen to be believed and the header was almost as bad. Ince was solid as usual without being that menacing, Kaz looked as lively as ever but his final ball is woeful at times, missed Conway to be honest, not as dynamic but his crossing is excellent.
Ulloa on to late for me, should have had 30 minutes to make an impact and get some match fitness. Huddersfield worked hard, but were pretty poor in all honesty, definitely two points dropped.
Looking forward to Charlton, really fancy a win there, gotta get Leo on earlier though.

It's been said many times before but we are very very close to being a very good side..... obviously the return of Ulloa, and possibly the return of Conway on the left would help as he certainly seems to have the nod on delivery over the others? I think Buckley is preferable on the right and would get my nod over David this season. And then we have Orlandi to fit in too, but other than that I like the look of today's side.

need to look at other results to keep a sense of proportion. Leeds could not beat bottom club Barnsley at home, Reading lost at home to Wigan who we beat so recently. This will happen time and again in this very tight division. We are now only two points off the play off places and everything to play for over the very busy period coming up. Don't understand the downbeat comments on here. OK today was well below par -do you think OG and the players don't know this ? Better performances and results will come our way in the coming weeks.

From early on you just felt it was one of those games where we weren't going to score and even worse Huddersfield might knick it, which would have been harsh. We showed a lot of power in midfied today with Bridcutt Agustein and the impressive Ince never allowing them to get much. They played a lot of long ball stuff, hit and hope. 63%/37%possession which says it all.

I think maybe it is time for El-Abd to be the 1st choice to play along side Upson. Brezovan did what he neded to adequately, but I still much prefer TK. Buckley playing on the left was a mistake and he looked a bit lacking in confidence.

No Lita at all. What a waste of time and money it was to bing him to the club, but then I am speaking with the benefit of hindsight.

I imagine Robins will be the happier Manager tonight. However, we should be good enough to see off Charlton on Boxing Day to get things back on track.

Bruno was simply outstanding in the second half and therefore man of the match to Bridcutt was palpably absurd in my view. I think Greer might have struggled against Vaughan - another fine display by El Abd, who in particular distributes much quicker than Greer. Just as I joined the Barnes fan club, he has a match to reconsider my membership. Buckley? A shadow of the old fashioned winger he was, who used to set the pulses racing. Sadly,no longer in the first eleven for me when every one is fit and Conway returns. How we missed Conway today.
Pleased to see some encouraging contributions from Augustein and Lopez but disappointed that Crofts was jettisoned today.

Rather disappointing though we played pretty well other than when it came to scoring. Today's starting eleven had only scored 9 goals this season (Barnes 5, Upson 2, Buckley and David 1 each). With Barnes having an off-day it was very hard to see where a goal was going to come from. None of the midfield trio of Bridcutt, Ince and Agustien are goalscorers and Buckley and David are only occasional scorers from open play. Our home form is a concern - if we expect to gain points on the teams above us we can't afford to lose at home to Barnsley (bottom of the table) and fail to beat a poor Huddersfield team. We were terrific against Leicester but we have only got one point at home against two far worse teams.

The basic truth is for three seasons in the championship now we have dominated possession and do not have the firepower up front to make it really count. Ashley Barnes is a terrible finisher always has been and always will be. Works hard can play in different positions yes. But is a terrible finisher until we accept this and stop the cods wallop that denies this, we will not go up. It's as simple so that for me.

On another day Barnes would have scored, they would have won their pen and we would have won 2-1.
It's just the way it goes.
Coming up to the half- way point of the season, with key players returning to the fold we're just two points off the play offs.
Given the Gus debacle, and new coach Oscar G coming in without the benefit of a thorough pre-season assessment of the squad, I dunno about you guys, but I would deffo have taken that back in August.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the season we won the League One Title, did Barnes not score 20 goals and Murray 22? The following season I believe Barnes was top scorer and he is at present, again top scorer admittedly Ulloa has been out for some time but Barnes, while covering a multitude of roles is still scoring'

It's as simple so that for me.[/p][/quote]Correct me if I'm wrong, but the season we won the League One Title, did Barnes not score 20 goals and Murray 22? The following season I believe Barnes was top scorer and he is at present, again top scorer admittedly Ulloa has been out for some time but Barnes, while covering a multitude of roles is still scoring' Can you honestly say that you perform at your peak every single day at work? This is a young guy, not a machine! KeefyH44

Ringmer Rich says...

Huddersfield were not poor, they played a containing game and did their job really well. They came with a plan and might even have nicked it if that free header was on target. Agustien looked excellent in the first half, challenging for and winning most loose balls. He disappeared in the second. Barnes bashing appears to be the order of the day, but he needs support. He shouldn't be the front man, his game is best playing just behind.
