Oscar has fears over Conway bid

The Argus: Craig Conway impressed on loan for Albion Craig Conway impressed on loan for Albion

Albion head coach Oscar Garcia fears finances could be a stumbling block to his hopes of bringing back Craig Conway.

Oscar is keen to re-sign the Cardiff winger, especially now that Will Buckley has been ruled out for four weeks by a bad hamstring tear sustained in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Blackpool.

But the Spaniard is unsure how much scope he will have to strengthen the squad during the January transfer window, with the Seagulls committed to adhering to Financial Fair Play regulations.

Oscar, asked if he wants Conway back, said: “Yes, of course, but with the Financial Fair Play I don’t know if this can happen. We have to wait.”

Conway impressed during a 93-day loan spell which ended earlier this month.

He was surplus to requirements at Cardiff but the Scotland international’s future has been complicated by the departure of their manager Malky Mackay.

Meanwhile, Albion are believed to be keeping tabs on Evandro Goebel, a 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder with Portuguese club Estoril who also holds a Serbian passport.

The former Brazil under-20 international had a spell with Red Star Belgrade before signing for Estoril two summers ago.

Oscar will be without Gordon Greer again, as well as Buckley, for Bournemouth’s visit tomorrow.

The captain is not ready to return yet from the calf injury he suffered in the early stages of the home victory over leaders Leicester earlier this month so Adam El-Abd will deputise once more in the centre of defence.

Oscar said: “Gordon has started running and hopefully this week he can start training with the rest of the team.”

First choice full-backs Bruno (thigh) and Stephen Ward (concussion) are also doubts as Albion bid to improve on a sequence of nine points from a possible 21 at The Amex.

Oscar said: “Bournemouth have a good sqaud and they are playing well. It will be tough but we want to get back to winning ways at home.”

The blow of losing winger Buckley has been softened by the return before the end of January of long-term injury victim Craig Mackail-Smith, according to club doctor Helge Riepenhof.

The striker has not played since March after rupturing an Achilles and suffering ankle damage during his recovery.

Sick of hearing about FFP potentially scuppering new signings.

We all know it exists and that we as a club RIGHTLY want to adhere to the riles.

If we can't afford a player that shouldn't cost the earth given his contract ends soon then things don't bode well for the rebuilding of the defence that will be required soonish.

Be nice to know we are planning to strengthen without having FFP rammed down our throats now and again.

Probably because with the confirmation in some press outlets of Gus Poyets impending move for Liam and possibly Buckley, we can only justify buying players by selling players. Shame.

Totally agree SMF20. If we cannot find a way to secure a player that to all intents and purposes is surplus to requirements something has to be seriously wrong. Like you, I'm fed up constantly hearing about FFP. By all means run the club on sensible financial lines, but this is becoming rediculous. If The Albion are having problems with gates of 27-28k what a mess the others must be in with gates around 10-15k.

Just this minute radio Sussex has announced that Poyet has tabled a bid of £3.5m for Bridcutt and Buckley. £2.5m and £1m respectively. Make that £5m Poyet and you may have a deal.

Perhaps its not a case of having to sell to buy, but selling (if it's true) to maximise a return on two players who've been "got at" and want to leave? Far better this way than having unhappy players who then leave for far less later on. It gives us a chance to plan and move on THIS season.
BTW, if I were a Sunderland fan. I'd be underwhelmed by the prospect of two from Brighton and would be tempted to suggest Gus is preparing for the championship....

I think this story has been put out just to make everyone aware we can't have our cake and it. If we want Conway and possibly one other then players have to leave.
Bridcut hasn't been the same since coming back from injury. Bottled a couple of 50/50s and generally looking like a player who knows he's leaving and doesn't want to risk getting injured. Been a great player for us and deserves his chance in the premieship. We just need to make sure we get a fair price.
Buckley does have far more potential than Conway at the highest level but you have to get there first and Buckley spends far too much time nursing those hamstrings. He's also a big earner which could well influence his tansfer.

Exactly, had Cardiff felt they Conway would be a big money sale, they would hardly loan him out for 90 days leaving 150 days left on his contract! He could easily have got injured and seen out his contract with Cardiff .

I agrre with Mark, that some of these deals have already been done. Most of us realise that Liam would go in January, for the right money, and Liam knew the deal had been done.
The Will Buckley bid was a little unexpected, but may explain why he thew away his 'sock ties' when he had to come off at Blackpool, maybe he thought it had scuppered his chance of a Premiership move.
It seems that a good many on here feel that £5 million would be a more reasonable price for both these lads, and if Albion can get Craig Conway and this Goebels lad without spending more than is coming in then we will all be happy.
Great news about CMS!!!!
