John Maggs has decided to leave Crawley Down for a second time

Crawley Down Gatwick are on the lookout for their fifth manager in just over a year after John Maggs decided to step down for a second time.

Maggs rejoined the Anvils at the end of March but was unable to prevent the inevitable relegation from Ryman south following a disastrous spell for the club with Francis Vines in charge.

Former Crawley Town and Horsham boss Maggs has decided he does not want to manage in the County League with a reduced budget, which the club insist is necessary after dropping down a level.

Crawley Down will be talking to Maggs’ assistant Cliff Cant about the possibility of taking over but is welcoming applications from other interested parties.

Chairman Brian Suckling said: “John is not able to carry on with the financial side of the package following the step back. The club can understand that with where John has managed for 40 years.

“The club must do what is right so it does not stretch itself beyond its means but we believe the budget we have set is very good and competitive for the level we will be playing at.

“It is an amicable parting and John will always be welcome at the club. We are grateful that he came back when he did and brought a degree of control to the situation, minimising the margin of defeats.”

Anyone interested in the position should email secretary Richard Munn at richardmunn@hotmail.co.uk.
