New keeper Stockdale could not resist Albion's top-flight set-up

Albion's new No. 1 David Stockdale says he could not resist the chance to join the Seagulls’ Premier League set-up.

Stockdale has moved to the Amex for around £1 million on a three-year contract after 21 appearances in the Premier League for relegated Fulham last season.

The 28-year-old Yorkshireman said: “Albion have got a lot of history and they’ve come such a long way in the last five years, and after speaking to everyone at the club I was delighted to come.

“Everyone spoke about where the club’s heading and the manager said we’re a club with Premier League facilities, and we’re now striving to get there as a team.

“When someone comes to you and says they want you to be a part of that and we’re willing to pay a significant fee, and then help you on our way with the facilities and infrastructure, how can you turn down a chance to play at a club like this?

“It’s nice for Brighton to show faith in me as a player. They’ve paid an awful lot of money for me and hopefully I can pay it back and help the club get into the Premier League next year.”

The capture of Stockdale, who still had a year left on his contract at Fulham, ends Albion’s wide-ranging search for a replacement for Tomasz Kuszczak since the Pole was released in May.

Their target list included Jack Butland, Kieren Westwood and Stephen Henderson but the move for Stockdale was aided by manager Sami Hyypia’s fellow Finn and goalkeeping coach Antti Niemi, who worked alongside him at Fulham.

Hyypia said: “It is a transfer we have been working on for some time and David is a goalkeeper with excellent pedigree. He has got very good experience of the Premier League and Championship but at 28 is in his prime.

“Alongside Casper Ankergren and Christian Walton, David’s arrival means we are satisfied with our goalkeeping options ahead of the new season.

“We still have some work to do in other areas in terms of recruitment but we are making good progress and this is an excellent signing and another quality addition to the squad.”

Stockdale’s decision to quit Fulham for Albion has been backed by ex-Seagull Steve Sidwell.

Midfielder Sidwell, now with Stoke, tweeted to his former Fulham team-mate: “A great club from top to bottom. All the best and have a great season.”

Meanwhile, Albion are taking another look at Cameroon defensive trialist Roderigue Ndiane in a development team friendly at Arundel tonight (7.45pm).

Stockdale is a class keeper. very pleased to get him on board.
Ward should be a steal at £100k but needs to sort out his personal terms.
Would love to see Bamford up top with CMS.
Someone mentioned a few weeks ago the possibility of Wilson Palacios on a free, would be good if we could get him too.

Perhaps a bit of Humble Pie eating today.
Well done management, only you have the finger on the pulse to run this great club. Only you fully know what we can afford and buy.
So carry on and spend wisely.

I think a lot of championship clubs would be interested at 100k
But as you say he won't take a drop in wages from 13k,
I suppose he thinks he can either take a pay off to leave if the window opens and then negotiate a new deal with a signing on fee at a new club, or he goes out on loan again with wolves paying 3k a week! Not sure they will do that!
Great piece of work getting keeper of his quality, we now need left back, creative mid, and a big man up front, I think we will go abroad for that one, better value ..... Thomas pekhart ?

Palacios has recurrent injury problems and could be seen as another Agustein.

Good to see our new premier league training facilities having an immediate affect, first team able to use all-weather pitch and attracting top players to the club. It can only add to our points tally.

Great signing. One of my good friends is a Fulham supporter. He is gutted to see Stockdale come here. Especially for the reported fee. Would be good to see one more come in before the Southampton game.

Hi JG. Why would he be our no.13? He's a more experienced keeper than CW who I believe will be no.13, as you put it. Ankers will stay on as back up to these two and see out the rest of his contract hanging around in case he's needed. I've no problem with that.
A lot of people in here are now "happier" if not actually "happy" and are still waiting for news of one or maybe two more good signings before the season starts.
I still think the Fans Forum on the 5th should see the board facing some tough questions about why the summer has gone as badly as it has. If not, then they've really been let off the hook IMO.
One good signing doesn't make a summer. (And yes I know there has been COG and Hughes as well but you know what I mean).

Just got back from the allotment. Am dismayed no more players have been signed. Our DoF is useless. Our season is going down the pan
Yet another feeble attempt of mine at humour on here.
Hopefully some of you have got used to it by now.

To be honest, I don't know an awful lot about Pekhart. Career stats seem ok but nothing too exciting.
If Sami was looking at the Finnish league, I see the top scorer there at the mo is an Argentine fella (Luis Solignac), could follow in the footsteps of the last one we had!
