David Stockdale was unhappy to be beaten by this Dusan Tadic strike for Southampton

First published in Sport by , Chief sports reporter

Albion's new No. 1 David Stockdale has volunteered for more game time to be ready for the start of the season.

Stockdale made his debut in Thursday night’s 3-1 defeat by Southampton at the Amex.

It was the final first team friendly for Sami Hyypia’s Seagulls before the big kick-off at home to Sheffield Wednesday next Saturday.

Stockdale, 28, would willingly play in warm-ups for the under-21s or under-18s following a summer without match action at former club Fulham.

He told The Argus: “I am going to play, hopefully, in some reserve games. I am going to ask the manager if he’ll let me play, because I need the minutes and he knows I need the minutes.

"I work hard every day on the training ground and he knows I need to do certain things to get right. If it takes every minute of every day to get ready for Sheffield Wednesday I’ll do it.

“To me it’s a game of football. If it’s got minutes in it, a ball in it, it’s all about getting ready for Sheffield Wednesday. If it’s an under-18 game I’ll play in it. I’m not the kind of guy that shirks away from a game."

The under-21s are in action at Worthing today (3pm) and have a game against Chelsea next week.

Stockdale said: “I have been around long enough to know what you need to be right for the season. A couple more games or 45 minute stints and a lot of hard work in the next week should see the best of me this season."

What a joy to hear a true professional. Welcome to our club David Stockdale.
Remembwr all those stories about David Beckham staying back after training to practice free kicks and crossing? How many if our current crop would benefit from taking a leaf from the two Davids' book?

Think he will turn out to be a more than capable replacement for TK, however he did look rusty against Southampton, should have done better with the first goal and never moved for the other two. Love his attitude though and I'm sure come Saturday he will be ready.

I know a Fulham season ticket holder who is very disappointed that he has left. Said that he rated him as a keeper and as a person. Seemed to care about results and the fans. This would seem to endorse those recommendations. Best of luck to DS and UTA.

Mayfield is just a sad-**** WUM who supports Bournemouth. The only reason he comes on here is because he doesn't have to message so far as he would to Bournemouth 😉 and if he talked more about his own club he would prove himself even more ignorant than he does with his pathetic efforts on here.

Humour? This is no laughing matter we've payed a million for a keeper who was part of Fulhams relegated squad. It's not all down to Stockdale of course but if you research match highlights from last season you'll find many errors that contributed to Fulhams demise. Unfortunately at the albion we get fobbed off with any signings because we are so desperate for players. We need to take a step back and see the bigger picture and then ask why a better keeper wasn't signed especially with the cash we now have available. On top of that we had a very good keeper named Tomasz Kusczak who was allowed to simply walk away when all the stops should've been pulled out to keep him. Again, think bigger picture.

I've said before there's three things that anyone let alone a footballer should have. They are a good attitude, a good attitude and last but not least a good attitude. David has these in shed loads and is clearly an outstanding role model.
I hope this rubs off on some of our younger players. We'll surely benefit.
Looking forward to next Saturday especially if we secure Baldock, Clayton and Ward.

Just trying to be positive because all these negative posters on here get right up my nose. Not that I take that much notice of their twaddle.
Heaven forbid any players read this stuff but if they do a bit of positive feedback and advice is better than some of the negative jibes they get.

Why has Kusczak not got a club yet then? Could it be his wage demands are just too high and we are not the only ones to think so.
Not doubt he will moderate them now and get something but we must not be blackmailed and spend the budget because that means we cannot sign someone else and you will Moan about that.

Kusczak left because he had convinced himself that he should be in the prem, only problem is that the prem clubs appear not to agree with him. Just about every prem club has two quality keepers, and even that hasn't opened any doors for TK, and wage demands wouldn't be the problem for a prem club, not if they wanted/needed him.

Blackpool should step in and make an offer, they need him.

Why did Fulham let Stockdale go ?,not having a go at him, think Magath did not think much of him, i know that if he is that good,Fulham and as now are in the championship would he not be a real asset.

My point exactly.

We must not be blackmailed by players who think they are worth more than the market.

The view that we should have just paid him what he wanted is ridiculous, he is a good keeper but everyone has their value and I am glad we are not paying over the odds. that is just good business and something football in general needs more of!

Again, think bigger picture.[/p]
Why has Kusczak not got a club yet then? Could it be his wage demands are just too high and we are not the only ones to think so. Not doubt he will moderate them now and get something but we must not be blackmailed and spend the budget because that means we cannot sign someone else and you will Moan about that. You are not seeing the whole picture my friend.[/p]
Blackpool should step in and make an offer, they need him.[/p]
My point exactly. We must not be blackmailed by players who think they are worth more than the market.
My glass is half full again. UTA
What do you mean half full, I reckon if I walked into a pub I'd recognise you because you'd be the one with a full pint and the biggest pair of blue and white rose tinted glasses on, it's not a dig it's a compliment.
Thanks AlfieT.
Just trying to be positive because all these negative posters on here get right up my nose. Not that I take that much notice of their twaddle.
Heaven forbid any players read this stuff but if they do a bit of positive feedback and advice is better than some of the negative jibes they get.
Football, like all sport, is about confidence and getting the best out of any situation. My glass half full comment was against glass half empty.
Mines a pint by the way, what's yours? UTA
Ok I'll get em in.

Looking forward to seeing Stockdale this season;we have had so may good keepers here over the years and looks like we have another one here.It was so sad what happened to TK;for first 2/3 of the season he was superb then his form faded away.Looks like his head was turned by his agent trying to get a deal at a Premier League club.
