The Argus Achievement Awards

Every year at The Argus we like to reward those members of the community who have done something great.
Nominations are now closed.
This is the seventh year we have held the awards to celebrate the great and the good of Sussex.
The Argus Achievement Awards 2008 champion all those who deserve recognition for their selfless, brave or generous actions during the past year.
2008 the Argus Achievement Awards Catagories:
Parent of The Year: We all think our parents are great but do you know of someone who has done that little bit extra? Whether they look after sick children or animals or help the little old lady down your road, nominate a worthy mum or dad.
Angel of The Year: Do you know of someone in the nursing or other caring profession who has made you, a patient or a visitor feel that little extra bit special?
The Carol Barnes Courageous Child of The Year: Carol Barnes was a great supporter of The Argus Achievement Awards and this category always touched her deeply. We are very proud that Carol’s family have allowed us to rename this award in her memory. Children are the most precious gift but has a child you know proved courageous by helping others or fighting illness?
Beyond The Call of Duty: Each year we see extraordinary people going beyond the call of duty. Do you know anyone who has risked their own safety to save another or counselled someone through a very difficult time?
School of The Year: Is your school the best in Sussex? Have you achieved a large amount of sporting awards, cleaned up the environment or conquered bullying?
Green Pupil of The Year, sponsored by Southern Water: A new category for this year. Does your school have an outstanding environmentally aware pupil? Do you know of a boy or girl who has worked particularly hard to save the planet or introduced energy efficiency savings at the school?
Teacher of The Year: Outstanding teachers inspire, encourage and motivate. They change children’s lives. Yet how often do we get the chance to say a proper thank you? Is your teacher the coolest, most understanding person? Does he or she go that little bit farther to make school the best place in the world?
Charity of The Year, sponsored by Legal and General: Every charity deserves this award. But tell us why yours is more deserving. Has a charity donated time or money, which has enabled you to achieve something?
Good Neighbour 0f The Year: Has your neighbour done something so special that he or she should receive an award?
Local Hero Of The Year: The word hero can mean many different things but only you can know. Has someone done something heroic that has changed your life?
Achiever Of The Year: Has someone you know surpassed themselves this year? Have they achieved something against all the odds?
Last year's glitzy awards dinner at Brighton's Hilton Metropole brought tears, laughter and applause from the room as the stories of the year's heroes unfolded. Peggy Ferris won the 2007 Parent of the Year award having given her life to caring for foster children despite going through surgery and gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy after suffering two brain tumours and breast cancer. Firefighters Brian Wembridge and Geoff Wicker who lost their lives doing the jobs they loved were remembered. Their deaths in the Lewes fireworks factory explosion had a profound effect on firefighters throughout the world and the men received the Local Hero of the Year award.
