Jubilee passes us by

Guildford: How will we be marking the Queen's Golden Jubilee musically? In a word, sparsely.

The Argus: The Queen: June jubilee The Queen: June jubilee

Only one event specifically dedicated to the occasion has been announced for the area.

The Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir will present Orb and Sceptre, a programme of music composed for the coronations of George II, Edward VII, George VI and Elizabeth II at Guildford Cathedral on April 6.

It includes Handel's Zadok the Priest and The King Shall Rejoice, Walton's Orb and Sceptre and Crown Imperial Marches, Parry's I Was Glad and Elgar's Coronation Ode.

The Jubilee seems to have taken local programme planners unawares.

Nothing remotely regal or celebratory features in the orchestral and choral seasons up to and including June when the official celebrations take place. Mozart's Coronation Piano Concerto and Mass or Handel's Coronation Anthems would not have gone amiss.
