Last year we lost our pub, the King’s Arms in George Street, Brighton. A group of about 14 of us, of mixed age between 50-75 years, used to meet up there every Friday night. We originally met each other in the pub 20 years ago.
The King’s Arms had live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night and that, more than anything, is what we all miss – a good singalong.
Johnny Wakelin would often perform, along with Stuart, Mark and “rock ’n’ roll Elvis” Steve, to name but a few.
We would enjoy a dance and a singalong, and when they played Delilah, the whole pub would come alive.
When previous owners Julie and Colin left, the pub was taken over and changed into a gay venue. We tried to find another pub suitable for our mixed age group, but it’s just not he same.
Now we’ve heard the King’s Arms has closed once more, and we are all hoping someone will re-open it as a traditional pub, along with the barmaids Sue, Dione and Angie and relief barman Shane.
We miss them all very much. If it doesn’t re-open, do any readers know of a good pub anywhere in Brighton we can have a good dance and singalong on a Friday night?
