Comedy Club 4 Kids Komedia, Brighton, Feb 6

Ah, Saturdays en famille! The 6am start, the Lego wars, the newspaper intriguingly remastered in felt tip as you make the coffee, the doomed pilgrimage to H&M. The Komedia’s excellent monthly comedy club will come as a welcome relief for all those ready to embrace hysteria by lunchtime.

Here, where all the acts were stand-up (while we all have a nice sit-down), there were no clowns or men in tights on unicycles. Here, children, they are going to make you laugh by the sheer power of words.

And quite a few children were genuinely excited by that, judging by the legs waggling all along the front row.

The tender age of the esteemed punters dictated no explicit material, unless we’re talking massive poos and bogies stashed behind headboards. That’s just the bogies stashed, not the massive poos, which were the subject of an international hiking incident.

This week’s acts, compere Alexis Dubus, Tiffany Stephens and Matt Green (see incident), were genuinely very funny and did a brilliant job of engaging their small hecklers in a series of delightful exchanges – and you don’t often see that at a stand-up gig. Neither is there normally a quiet seven-year-old Superman in the audience, more’s the pity.
