I was once recovering from a bout of tummy trouble in a hotel room in southern Morocco and the whole of Wish You Were Here was being played at full blast through the corridors. It was great (the music, not the illness).
At school, back in the day, listening to this album was something of a religious experience so it wasn’t surprising to see an almost-packed crowd of 40-somethings (plus a few young ’uns) worshipping at the shrine of this tribute band.
There were swaying bodies and nodding heads when the title track of said album was played and similar adulation for the second half mainstay of the show that included most of Dark Side Of The Moon, delivered in a confident, polished style.
Many of the sound effects were spot on, although sometimes the audience was willing musicians Lewis Hall (bass), Richard Morse (guitar), Robert Gerard (keyboards) and Steve Farmer (drums) to let rip.
This they finally did with Money and The Great Gig In The Sky, with backing vocalist J Marie Cooper pitching in with that achingly beautiful song that is the aural equivalent of an orgasm.
Like the enduring music of the Floyd, it lasts longer as well.
