Southern Water chief executive Les Dawson, left, hands over the donation to Michael Beard, editor of The Argus
Utility firm Southern Water
has pledged £200 to the editor
of The Argus for his charity
bike ride to Paris.
Michael Beard is getting on
his bike to mark the 50th year
of The Argus Appeal, which
raises thousands of pounds
every year for those in need in
the community.
Michael collected the cheque
from Southern Water chief
executive Les Dawson.
Mr Dawson said: "The Argus
Appeal helps thousands of
people in Sussex and it is a
privilege to support it in its
50th year.
"We wish Michael the very
best of luck in the cycle
challenge and in reaching his
fund-raising target."
Michael said: "It's fantastic to
get this sponsorship. The
Argus Appeal is still going
strong on its 50th birthday.

"Southern Water's support
will make a real difference to
someone in our community. If
ever I needed an incentive to
complete the ride, it is
support like this.
"This is incredibly generous
of Southern Water and makes
me even more determined to
reach Paris.
"My training is going well. I
managed to complete more
than 25 miles on Tuesday
evening - I just have to
double that and I'll be fine.
Seriously, I am not kidding
myself it will be easy, but
when so many people are
supporting me and wishing
me well, it's the spur to train.
"This support from Southern
Water means I have raised
more than £400 already. I still
have a long way to go to my
£3,000 target but I'm
extremely hopeful I can hit
that.
"If anyone is thinking of
sponsoring me I would stress
every single penny goes to
The Argus Appeal and a huge
range of charities and good
causes. Sponsorship does not
have to be large amounts.
Every pound will count so
please support me."
