What is it?

A cross country trek taking place on the beautiful South Downs across six days, Tuesday June 25 – Sunday June 30, 2013.

It’s the ultimate walking experience.

Michael Beard, group editor of The Argus and chairman of The Argus Appeal is leading the walk and you can choose to join him and the team on one or all of the days – it’s entirely upto you.
Your day will begin at the designated meeting point in Brighton and we will transport you to and from the meeting point to the start of your days walking (unless you have arranged overnight accommodation). A packed lunch and refreshments will be provided along the way.

You can come along on your own, with friends, colleagues or take the opportunity to use it as a corporate Well Being day.

Registration and Fundraising

By taking part you will be playing an important part in raising funds for The Argus Appeal.
The registration fee is just £20 which will include transport and a packed lunch. All we ask is that you raise a minimum of £100 for The Argus Appeal. Our promise to you is that every penny you raise will go to helping those in real need right here in the heart of our community!

Your Commitment:

YOUR CONTRACT: When you register for the South Downs Way Walk you undertake that you have the authority to accept and do accept these booking conditions. A contract will exist when we confirm your place on the walk. These Booking Conditions in conjunction with the information set out in the itinerary form the entire agreement between yourself and ourselves.

PARTICIPATION: You need to be a minimum of 14 years old, in suitable physical condition to undertake the South Downs Way Walk, as set out in the itinerary which will be issued 1 month before the event. You should be fully aware of the possible risks inherent when walking off road on the South Downs Way. It is a fundamental condition of joining any Charity Challenge that you accept the possibilities of delays, alterations or cancellations due to events outside our control. Places are subject to availability and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis for those who properly complete the registration formalities.

Bookings are non-transferable. We reserve the right on reasonable grounds to decline your request to participate in the event. Your entitlement to participate depends on our being satisfied that there are no circumstances under which we ought properly to decline your participation in the event. Our decision on your participation shall be final and binding.

In any circumstances where we decide that you may not participate in the event your registration fee will be refunded to you in full.

You must comply with the laws and regulations of the UK and comply with all reasonable instructions given by the event leaders relating to the health & safety and organisation of the event. If in our opinion, any event leader, accommodation manager or other person in authority feels that you are behaving in such a manner as to cause danger, distress or annoyance to others or cause damage to property, your event arrangements may be terminated by us. In such an event, we shall have no liability to you and will not be responsible for making any refunds, paying any compensation or meeting any costs or expenses you incur as a result. Furthermore, you must meet any expenses we incur as a result of your behaviour.

You agree that the information you provide to us is accurate and that we may use all necessary and relevant information, which we hold for the purpose of marketing and administering this event. However, we shall not pass on your personal data to anyone else outside our organisation, other than that to be used for promoting or marketing our own services (other than those applicable to the event). Nor shall we transfer such personal data to any third party except as maybe necessary for the purposes of the event.

PROMOTION: You agree that any photography taken prior to, during, or after the event, which may include you in it, may be used in publicity material connected with the Argus Appeal and that Newsquest (Southern) Ltd., will retain all rights, title and interest in such photography. Including but not limited to any royalties, proceeds, or other benefits derived from such material.

CONTRIBUTION LEVEL: Your registration fee is a contribution towards the cost of the event and will be used as a deposit for the event. To register for the event, you must pay £20 when returning the completed registration form to: The Argus Appeal South Downs Cycle Challenge, The Argus Appeal, Newsquest (Southern) Ltd., Argus House, Hollingbury, Brighton, East Sussex.

The registration fee is NON-REFUNDABLE unless we cancel the event for any reason other than war, threat of war, civil strife, natural, man made or nuclear disaster, industrial dispute, bureaucratic obstacles, terrorist activity, adverse weather conditions, fire or similar events. On receiving your registration fee we will issue you with a receipt of payment. You are responsible for your personal equipment, tips, additional food & drink, personal spending money, transport to and from the departure point, and any other activities not included in the Itinerary.

CONFIRMATION: We will let you know of your successful registration within 14 working days of our receiving your application. If the event is full you will receive a complete refund of all monies paid.

SPONSORSHIP: We MUST receive your £100 sponsorship money within six weeks of completion of the event and it is a condition of entry that you do so. You must also agree that you will not use the event to raise funds for any cause other than the Argus Appeal, unless previously agreed.

CANCELLATION OR WITHDRAWAL: Due to costs already incurred we cannot refund your £20 registration fee if you wish to cancel your booking. You should put your cancellation in writing to The Argus Appeal, Newsquest (Southern) Ltd., Argus House, Hollingbury, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 8AR.

Most participants will be expected to complete the event. However, if you are obliged to cut the challenge short due to ill-health or for any other reason, there will be no refund of registration fees paid. If you cancel, or you are required to withdraw from the event you will be required to send all sponsorship money collected or received.

TRAFFIC REGULATIONS & RULES, RIGHTS OF WAY LEGISLATION: This event is not a race and walking on the highway or in the countryside should obey the appropriate rules and regulations of the highway.

ACCOMMODATION: Newsquest are not responsible for organising accomodation and if you do so, you are responsible for getting to the start and home from the finish points on a daily basis.

TRANSPORTATION: Walkers will be transported from Brighton to the start and back home to the finish on a daily basis.

MEDICAL TREATMENT: It is a condition of joining an event that in cases of emergency where next of kin cannot be contacted we have your authority to arrange any necessary medical or surgical treatments and to sign any required form of consent on your behalf.

IF WE AMEND THE ITINERARY: The itineraries and other details are published in good faith as statements of intention only and reasonable changes to the itinerary, vehicle and equipment use, may be made where deemed necessary or advisable. While we will make all proper and reasonable efforts to maintain the advertised Itinerary we do not guarantee that we can keep to the intended Itinerary and we therefore reserve the right to amend the itinerary of the event as and when it may become necessary to do so. If there is a minor modification before you depart, we will try to notify you, although we are not obliged to do so, nor are we obliged to pay any compensation. We are not liable for any penalty charges associated with “supersaver” type connecting rail fares, in the event of a change to a departure date or-time.

Any pick-up or return timings set out in our itinerary are subject to late change and all details given to you are for guidance only.

If we are required to change the itinerary during the event, an event organiser will arrange the best alternative. This decision will rest on the sole judgement of the event leader. The decision of the event leader is final on all matters. We are not responsible for changes, which arise as a result of situations outside of our control. Such as technical or maintenance problems with means of transportation and changes imposed by re-scheduling, war or threat of war, civil strife, industrial disputes, natural disasters, bad weather, bureaucratic obstacles or terrorist activity.

IF WE CANCEL THE EVENT: We reserve the right in any circumstance to cancel the event. However in no case will we cancel the event less than six weeks before the scheduled departure date unless it is for reasons outside of our control i.e. bad weather etc. If we have to cancel the event before the date of departure (other than Force Majeure) we will offer you either (i) an alternative event date (though if the alternative offered is at additional cost, the difference will be payable by you) or (ii) a full refund of your registration fee, in either case being the only recompense which will be due to you.

OUR LIABILITY: Clients together with their personal property including baggage, are at all times solely at their own risk. We do not accept responsibility in respect of death, bodily injury or illness of any person participating in the event as a result of (but not limited to) physical exertion for which a guest is not prepared; forces of nature; consumption of alcoholic beverages; civil unrest; terrorism; breakdown of equipment; lack of access to medical attention; and the adequacy of medical attention once provided. Nothing in this agreement between you and us excludes our liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by our proven negligence.

RISKS: An adventure challenge is not without risks. You must be adequately fit to cover the distances and undertake the program set out in your itinerary. You therefore take part entirely at your own risk and agree to indemnify us, The Argus Appeal, Newsquest (Southern) Ltd., our employees, agents, sub-contractors and suppliers against claims for loss or damage to personal property or for loss or consequential losses or claims through your participation in this event arising from your own actions.

COMPLAINTS: We will do our very best to ensure that your travel arrangements go according to plan. However, if you have a complaint arising out of what we have agreed to provide for you please let us know at the earliest opportunity. If a problem arises during the event, it is important that you advise an event leader at the earliest opportunity who will endeavour to put things right. If your complaint cannot be resolved locally you should advise us within 28 days, in writing, with all other relevant information. Your letter will be given prompt attention. If you fail to follow this simple procedure we cannot accept responsibility, as we would have been deprived of the opportunity to investigate the matter and hopefully rectify any problem.

APPLICABLE LAW: The contract between us, and these booking conditions are governed by and construed in accordance with English law. Both parties agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts. In the event that any clause or provision of these Booking Conditions shall be held to be invalid, the invalidity of such clause or provision shall not otherwise affect the remaining provisions of this contract, which shall continue and be enforceable. To express my understanding of these Booking Conditions, I have signed the declaration on the Registration Form.
