Everyone has an opinion of the West Pier – most people either love it or hate it

When I first moved down to Brighton, I was in the group that saw it as derelict remains of a building that should be torn down, but I have really grown to love the pier and think it can be quite beautiful. I think its uniqueness has made it somewhat an icon for Brighton with a lot more to it than the new pier.

On Wednesday, the pier was included in a stunt where Tiger beer claimed they would use lasers to light up the pier to its former glory. It was cold and snowy, but still quite a few people came down to see the laser show. While I wouldn’t say the pier was it up to its former glory, it did prove to be quite a spectacular light show where you could see all beams of the structure and more detail than you can normally see.

I did take my camera down but forgot my tripod so ended up with some blurry pictures – but < ahref=" http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1250165/Light-brings-Brightons-west-pier-life-Chinese-New-Year-celebration.html">the Daily Mail had some great ones here.

I wonder if this will do anything for the fate of the pier and if this could lead to more stunts surrounding the pier?

As a Brighton lad, I can tell you, Laura, that it was a really beautiful structure. It had tremendous elegance. If I say it was a bit like a cat, compared with the bull of the Palace Pier, I hope that might convey a bit of its romance. To use another metaphor, the West Pier represented all that was most sophisticated about Brighton (hence the grade 1 listing), whilst the Palace Pier all that is most vulgar. And I mean that in the best sense: it is the combination of the two that makes me love my home town so much; and it is also what makes me so angry about the way in which corruption in arriviste councillors on the make has, throughout my 50 years, wreaked so much damage on the town's heritage.
There, that's my rant for the day!
