Smartphone Killed The Pub-Quiz

DON'T DO IT: Step Away From the Phone DON'T DO IT: Step Away From the Phone

Ok not as catchy as Video Killed The Radio Star and maybe not as true but it can’t be denied that the fact we have easy access to every answer in our bags and pockets is impacting on our traditional quiz!

I love a pub quiz, I really do. I’m not great at them anymore sadly. I used to have a good head for trivia but since I gave birth I find even remembering people’s names hard sometimes. But I still enjoy the cut and thrust and exhilaration of a good pub quiz and with a little band of friends we regularly attend some of the fantastic well thought out quizzes in Brighton and Hove. Pitting your wits against the next table, the quizmaster and even those in your team as you sit back, arms folded declaring loudly ‘Well put that down if you like but I’m sure its wrong!’ The eyes closed as you listen to the piece of music being played or the groaning or cheering as the correct answers are read out.

But it seems that a bit of innocence has been lost since the advent of the smartphone. The insinuation is that surely everyone is secretly sourcing the correct information whilst visiting the gents or having a ciggie outside. Of course that’s not the case and usually those that enjoy a pub quiz the most wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing. I see a big show being made of team members remembering to put their phones back in their bag or exclaiming in ringing tones ‘I’ll just turn this off’ for the benefit of the next table.

But that doesn’t stop the accusations, as the night wears on you’ll often hear the shout go up in the direction of a winning team ‘they’re using their phones, I saw them’ (only half joking). Recently my friend went out to call a cab and on her return it was suggested she had been investigating, with the best will in the world I am sure she wasn’t asking the taxi switch when did Tainted Love by Soft Cell first go to number one (1981)! Heaven forbid you have to go and check on your babysitters or send a text to your husband.

I can’t deny I have been tempted, or even given in to that temptation. When you know you absolutely know it but can’t quite pull the answer from your beery brain its almost justified to quickly text your film-geek mate or hook up to the Internet Movie Database, or is it? Well of course its not, but maybe that has now become part of the cut and thrust of our tradition pub quiz.

You openly admit to having cheated then ponder why your friend is accused of the same thing! I would advise fellow players to watch you and your team very closely indeed.

As I say its all part of going to a quiz now rightly or wrongly, whether you use a phone or not. Everyone either does it or is suspicious of it. Sometimes you're tempted, sometimes you abhor the idea of it! We accuse each other of it but consider it oursleves.

But still, a post just wouldn't be the same without a comment from you.

Its a shame, I also enjoy a good pub quiz, but I guess sometimes modernity has it's drawbacks.
Maybe for hardcore quizzers, all phones turned off and in a displayed communal bag until the end of the quiz. I mean how did we survive before the advent of the mobile?

I thought this to often be the case but have never heard it freely admitted, so hats off to your honesty.

As always, RH, you touch on important points …..

I know I’m ‘out of date’, in more ways than one, but I’m really surprised you feel the good old pub quiz has been ‘killed’ by Smartphones. In my younger days, long before electronic technology, many a Friday evening found me involved a pub quiz; no ‘pub regular’ ever felt humiliated because others scored better. (Are those who DO reveal something about themselves!?) At that time, pocket computers didn’t exist, but many carried dictionaries in their pockets – but nobody argued about ‘fairness’!

Provided participants are NOT competing for a ‘cash prize’ (or equivalent), does it really matter who ‘wins’? Surely, anything should go? Remembering my very favourite TV programme, Stephen Fry’s QI, does anyone seriously imagine Alan Davies’ feels ‘low’ because, with monotonous regularity each week, he is declared over-all ‘loser’?

I’m no longer a pub regular (can’t afford the prices – no joke!); often, I play chess with the computer. Always enjoyed the game (used to play regularly in a pub, once!); only ‘an average’ player, I have realized when I beat someone it is because he/she made MORE mistakes than I did. The computer never ‘makes mistakes’ – so although I never actually ‘win’ nowadays, ‘game enjoyment’ relates to the number of moves I can survive. Much more satisfying! (I’m attempting to show (probably unsuccessfully?) why competing with a machine would INCREASE my enjoyment – as would the presence of a ‘pocket aide’ in the other team’s pockets at a pub quiz.)

Of course, you and Burgess901 have identified the common developmental problem facing us all – not necessarily ‘having babies’, just ageing bodies. When I watch the occasional Chris Tarrant, the difference between the contestant and me is frequently that he or she produces ‘a name’ to order – and so could I, given an extra fifteen minutes.

I have never had one of those newfangled phones and never will. Who am I going to call? I live alone in a ghost town in the Mojave Desert trying not to go crazy from cabin fever.

Hi there
Burgess901 - its a good point, maybe much could be made of the communal putting away of phones!
Although I imagine there would be much muttering about having to do such a thing - although at least it would bring to light that the pub has recognised its going on!

But then as Anubis points out - whats the real problem anyway? I suppose it is true that 'anything goes' when essentially the exercise is meant to be a fun one. However, many would argue that its a bit more important than that and like to feel superior to those who have to stoop to using more than their brain!

Its so true that age / children can impact on our quizzing and gameplay - maybe the knowledge isn't lost but as you describe - just hiding better!

Until next time... RH xx
