Toothbrush Teachings

Twitter, Facebook, email...all ways to seemingly connect with others. Very tempting for those of us who like to distract ourselves. I know that meditation will help me. Being quiet. Being still. Being with myself. The science, philosophy and spiritual practices of our times all tell me so.

I had two toothbrushes. The usual basic bristly one and a sonic one. The sonic one works best. The trouble, I discovered, with the sonic one is that it runs for two minutes and, apart from moving it around your mouth, you don't do much with it. Two. Whole. Minutes.

Faced with those two minutes I usually grabbed the regular one. Hah, I can control you! I can brush and I can do it for as long or as little as I like.

I've finally accepted that this is not clever. It's gone in the bin.

Now I have two minutes of enforced quiet not doing twice a day.

And my teeth feel fantastic.

Karen! I’m sure I’m not the only regular reader of your posts who is reeling from your great discovery -- and is grateful to you, personally, for spending so much of your time seeking the true ‘meaning’ of life. Now, following months of contemplation, you report to us your significant progress! Sharing with us all the real essence of meaningful life being the exploration of one’s own ‘inner self’ – that deeply embedded ‘something’ that David Hume argued ‘didn’t exist’ (so inspiring Kant to write his ‘Pure Reason’); multitudes of us mistakenly followed in Hume’s footsteps – if only these misguided millions (I admit to being one of them!) could forget all about ‘rationalism’ and ‘logic’ and Karl Popper, and instead peer deeper into their navels and devote more time to meditation – seeking the truth embedded deeply within each and every one of us, yet awaiting discovery.

You are clearly not one of those ineffectual individuals with nothing more concrete in their lives than idle speculation -- rather a devotee of praxis! – not just a ‘thinker’ – rather a ‘doer’; the true secret of life is ‘activity’, without hesitation, you apply your theory to practice – AND CAST YOUR TOOTHBRUSH INTO THE BIN -- bravo!!! Meditation, for you, is NOT something to be taken up and put down, half-heartedly; no, you have salvaged TWO MINUTES every day, set aside for this soul-searching activity!

All of us (dedicated readers of your posts) are so grateful to you for your efforts during the last six months or so – and for sharing with us, not only your varied and educational activities, but the crucial lessons you have learned. My only regret is that I (and no doubt the majority of your readers) have only one toothbrush – and it’s very much a ‘manual’ one, so we’ll just have to find two minutes elsewhere else in the day …. But fear not -- we'll grasp the challenge with both hands!!

Maybe, in another six months you’ll come up with yet another earth-shattering discovery to be shared with your traumatized readers ?! How proud your parents would be .....

Just being is hard for a do-er.

Thanks, as ever, for your entertaining response.

I love that your responses are longer than my posts.

Time for an anubis blog, perhaps?

There are enough blogs laden with drivel on this site, we don’t need to add to it.
