And........relax

I posted something recently on Facebook about the pleasure I was finding in my job now that I've decided long term it's not for me. Once the decision was made, I started enjoying it more. I relaxed into it. It wasn't so important and laden with meaning so I performed better and had fun with it. Yegads, I even became more creative. Why, I lamented, was it only when I've decided to let something go, that I start firing on all cylinders? Wouldn't it be wonderful to experience that sense of freedom and fun without leaving jobs, relationships and even, in my case, countries?

For decades people have been telling me to "relax, stop being so uptight/intense, let go". Do you know how unhelpful this is for an uptight person? Does it help? Of course it doesn't. We uptight folk know we need to relax and let go; what we we don't know is how. And being self-critical souls, we flagellate ourselves and get more stressed because we know we should let go and we can't.

I have been working on this (note working on, not relaxing into) for much of the last year and I am getting better at it. But I am still a words person. And language is important.

John Purkiss (he of 'Brand You' fame) posted this in response to my FB rant "Sounds like letting go to me. Much more fun than clinging/attachment. :-)"

Bingo! Clinging. Now isn't that the most unappealing word for describing attachment, hanging on, not letting go and generally being an uptight so and so?

I only have to think of the word and I loosen my grip. Not on reality, folks. On whatever I've been attaching inordinate amounts of meaning to.

Clinging - my new antidote word.

Maybe it'd have been better if it remained 'anonymous' Karen?! Then I might have written:

Occasionally there are unique individuals possessing so much wisdom, who spend their lifetimes ‘deep in thought’, uncovering the secrets of life and willing to share their discoveries with us (the common herd, the less than adequate human beings), who hope to enlighten us all as to how WE ALSO can transform ourselves by making our lives more ‘meaningful’, ‘more relaxed’ -- and hence ‘much happier’!

These wise philosophers are invariably the most humble and modest persons living amongst us; shunning the momentous public acclaim their momentous philosophical discoveries might engender, they prefer to write anonymously, not even using a ‘pen name’. Let’s call her ‘Ms A’. Clearly neuken nutteloze krant would have failed to appreciate this genuine ‘self-effacement shown by Ms A -- nor the IMPORTANCE of these discoveries following “several decades” (!) of ‘contemplation’; those of us fortunate enough to have jobs, DON’T HAVE TO REMAIN IN THOSE JOBS FOR EVER. All workers are completely ‘free’ to walk out of their workplaces whenever they choose. They need not worry about dependent families (‘relatives’ ?), nor about social commitments (even to ‘countries’) … just realizing the truth of Ms A’s ‘discovery’ leaves us TOTALLY FREE, free to abandon the totality of the human world.

We should bow our heads before Ms A’s wisdom and humility, neuken nutteloze krant, not ridicule it! (It's the ideas we should be addressing -- not the individual who says it ....)

Afterthoughts!

Re-reading what I scribbled a couple of hours ago, it suddenly occurred to me that naive readers may not have detected I was simply 'taking the mickey' of your latest absurdities, Karen.

It is unfortunate you seem to always provoke me into making ridicule of your stances. In reality, it seems unlikely your life could really be so isolated from any commitment other than to yourself; that's how you come across ....

Your previous post (where you provided no opportunity for comment) DID leave me wanting to address seriously and soberly (you had described your 'discoveries' relating to possible careers in psychology); I felt your views did not truly represent or understand the situation as it really is .... but no doubt you've moved on now so the issue is redundant ....

Back to the original point. Apologies if my regular ridicules cause offence; they are never intended maliciously!
