breaking news -- the first suicide (?) has been attributed to this scandal (find better word)--
as discussed this week at the Brighton and Hove Community Reporters meeting-up, at the back of my mind was the number of deaths caused by the awfull stories peddled by NOTW --
indeed, was David Kelly hacked to death by some journalist working for NOTW?

If you wish to find scurrilous suggestions, maybe you should start with your own contributions, Roy?!
Having as much access to the 'true facts' as you do, I have very mixed feelings about all this. Just a couple of the important 'starting points' in my book:
I am a strong supporter of a free press -- and by those words, I mean EXACTLY what they say .... FREE SPEECH.
People who talk on 'phones or write emails should be fully aware these mechanisms are easily read by others in the wider community: if they want proper privacy then they should choose a different means of communication. If they are subjected to undeserved misrepresentation or slander, they should be provided the means to take the appropriate legal action, state assisted -- and the 'damages' rigorously applied to the guilty parties.
Personally, I have never purchased a copy of the 'Sun' or the 'News of the World', but have found odd copies on a bus or train -- but this has only confirmed to me it is not a paper worthy of purchase -- but we are all different people -- nobody tells me what papers I should buy and it would be impertinent of me to imagine I could pass judgement on other people's interests. Personally, I was therefore disappointed, that Murdoch felt obliged to shut down his Sunday paper -- that's not the way I perceive 'a free society'.
Millie's 'phone. The turning point in public opinion seems to have been the acknowledgement that NoW reporter had hacked into the murdered girl's mobile. I do not see this fact as being in any sense 'critical'. When a young person disappears or is murdered, the parents are automatically the immediate no.1 suspects -- and in the majority of cases (statistically) this is usually correct. My understanding is, the parents (or parent) were the first police suspects. If the police were doing their job properly, they also were 'hacking' into Millie's phone -- if they weren't, and if some essential clue had appeared on that 'phone, the general public would have been so grateful to the NoW --- it's very easy to be very 'high & moral' with the wisdom of hindsight!
The three main political parties are leaping onto the bandwagon, attempting to manufacture future votes by their condemnations of their political opponents -- extreme examples of pots calling kettles black !!
The real 'discovery' (if you can call it a discovery -- since I've been on about for years ... starting from the Stockwell shooting 'cover up' following by an officer criticized for his role in that event being made head of IPCC) ... is the further revelations of the alleged police involvement and corruption at every level -- all with the cognisance of the party leaders. So whatever the outcome, look for the deeper facts .... that there will be a 'united front' determined to produce a massive 'cover up' .... blaming it all on the evil demon, Rupert!
If it's 'loss of life' that worries you, Roy, look at the thousands killed in the Middle East in recent years by our political bosses, rather than an 'alleged' suicide ....
